penn 525 advice

just got a 525 mag extra and i assumed i would get some kind of booklet in the box showing how to set it up etc but whats in there is not much cop for a novice , does anyone have any tips for setting the braking & drag ,how far i should fill the spool, and am i right in thinking it only comes with 2 magnets in but you can have 4 , sorry if these are daft questions . many thanks davey

IIRC it comes with 4 magnets fitted, and two more to put in. As for the brake I'd suggest you set it to full and ease it off from there.

I've got all the magnets in mine and have the brakes full on and it still birdnests on me unless I keep my thumb over the spool. I filled mine to within 3 or 4mm of the top of the spool.

in all the photos i have looked at the lever on the handle side is made of black plastic but mine has a metal lever that looks like stainless steel ? is this an old / new model does anyone have any idea why ??

I think it's the new model mate: saw one in the shop the other day the same, whereas mine (from last year) have the plasticky one. I believe Penn were bought up recently & may have changed their production somewhat - I'm sure someone a bit more in the know will have more details.

The old 525's have the black lever and the mag xtra,supermag and supermag xtra have the silver/chrome coloured lever on the handle.

For my normal 525 mag - same as above, leave a canny lip e.g. 5mm, put in all the mags, set drag tight, set spool tension so that there is a tiny discernable little wobble in the spool, set mags to full - you'll only ever peel them off 3 of the max when fishing. Keep your finger over the spool when u cast!

take the side off were the slide is and youll see like a small bridge thing just place the magnets under neath that and youll be sorted m8 dont add extra magnets it wont run properly
