oright everybody . bit of help needed here please . i own a mag xtra a supermag xtra and an original 525 mag. im having a problem with my original mag, and i and a couple of lads who are really clued up have had it stripped down and cant seam to find the problem . when i flick the switch down to cast out free spool i flick it back up to put my rod on tripod or what ever and the spool is still running free ? i have to move the handle about back and forth then it suddenly clicks back into gear? it started of firstly not to bad and if i moved the handle slightly it would click straight back into gear.. now its geting to the point where i have to really move the handle back and forth before it goes into gear. if any one else has had this problem or no what it is your help would be apreciated.. is this a comon fault with the original 525mag? the real has been well looked after and is imaculate. thanks in advance

its the anti reverse bearing.its a complete unit £14 from good tackle shops,
easy to do yourself.the bearing is a blue case with about 20 pole bars (there the bearings) 100% its that

Funny that,my origional 525mag just started doing that on saturday was getting on right on my wick, think i`ll strip it down and have a look, thanks.

would say it was the pinion gear worn down on the end or the little silver thing on the spool under the circlip what u need to take off to get to the bearing, try a pinion gear and the little silver part on the spool off 1 of the good reels and see if it fixes it. or it could just need a good greasing up

thanks chaps.. its been stripped right down and cleaned out of me mate hu owns a tackle shop . he said it could of been the main bearing thing in the centre were the pinnion gear goes into .. does this push out tho ? has he wasnt sure wether it was machine pressed into the casing ? i couldnt take my working parts of my other reels as the new uns guts are slightly different to the old mags

sure the parts are the same on the original mag, mag extra and supermag extra iv changed a few parts on some of my reels and they work spot on. the anti reverse bearing is the 1 under the star drag, dont know if that would make it do what u describe i thought it just supported the main gear and stopped the handle from turnin backwards. try changing the little silver part that keeps the bearing in the spool just remove the circlip then try a difrent 1 on. i think it will be the pinion gear not gripping that silver thing properly, the pinion might not be popping back out enough after its been in free spool the plate what the free spool lever moves might be sticking mine done it after 8 years lol now it get cleaned every few month

Must be catching,my original mag is doing it but not the later models.Had a look inside and after a clean and regrease it still does it now and then.

Just got mine out to see what I can see and it is working fine just now but it will do it when I go fishing. I just know it

1 of mine used to do it, i think i just flipped over the little silver part what keeps the bearing in on the spool. but when it used to do it i just used to keep my thumb on the spool when puting it back in gear and push down on the spool with abit pressure and turn the handle a bit used to get it in gear then work untill i put it in freespool next time

The end of the pinion gear wears and then instead of having a nice square step to lock onto the spool it has a taper which can slip out.
Changed pinion gear and clutch plate on mine and solved it.
£2 for the plate and £6.50 for the pinion gear.
hope this helps
