Hi new poster and angler, just looking for some advise.Just bought a second hand Penn 525 super mag and carnt seem to get the mag brakes to work, when the knob is turned fully to the max(+) there still doesnt seem to be any resistance on the spool,Took the end plate off and all the magnets are present.Any info. would be appreciated thanks in advance.
Also what do the magnets work against as the spool is aliuminium

You should not be able to feel the resistance really by touch, the difference will only become apparent when casting. Use the spool adjusting knob (the little silver one under the star drag) and use only 1/4 turns until you have only a fraction of spool play either side of the cage rim. Do this with the spool full of line and the spool release in the off position

When you are casting put the brakes on full and then adjust off a little after each practise until you are happy with the performance and feel confident.

The magnets are rare earth magnets, very powerful over standard magnets. The closer they are to the spool (+)the slower it will turn due to the pull of the magnetic force and when you back the dial/knob off (-), visa versa.

magnetic braking

hi ken ill try to ans your question. the spool has to be made of a conducting material. the magnet generates small eddy currents in the spool which in turn set up a magnetic field which opposes the field which created them thus slowing the spool. different reels use various methods :- the new 7ht alters the field strength, most reels work by varying the distance of the mags from the spool, the okumas vary the distance of the magnets from the spool periphery and hence the speed of the spool passing the mags. you should be able to see some difference between the mags full on and full off if the spool is spun using the handle and disengaging the spool while you do this. there should be a noticable diff in the time the spool spins. hope this helps

Cheers for that jul,but still not sure why there is no resistance on the supermag i have. The spool is made from a no conduucting material,is there something missing from the spool i.e a disc made from a conducting material or something.I know this sounds daft but being new to the sport I dont reallyhave a clue..

hi ken b , what area are u from would have a look at it for you i do mag conversions myself and should be able to help .
john

Hi John,i live in peterlee going to try and check the polarity of the magnetsto see if it makes a difference.Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

hi, live in houghton-le-spring myself if you need some help just pm easily sorted. great reels the penn 525 very universal
