Penn 970 Mag?

Just wanted to know if anyone out there has come across a Penn 970 Mag before as I’ve just been offered one for 110 notes, the seller say’s they were the dog’s bollocks in the late 80’s but he’s bound to say that and this one he has is brand new – just wanted to query it before I put my hand in my pocket as he’s been known for being a bit….(understatement of the year) of a gob ****e! I know the older reels from Penn were better quality with them being built in the States compared to some of the rubbish built in China these days!

And advice would be appreciated:thumbup:

Dont know anything about it like but i wudnt go hoyin that kind of money at any reel that age. Say out gans rong with it it would be a nightmare to get parts for. Your best of buyin a newer reel mate and have ne worries with it

dont know anything about that model reel,unless you can afford to lose the money or are a collector,would not touch it with a barge pole

used one for several years - absolutely bulletproof. very fast so needs medium to thick oil in the bearings. only paid £60 for mine used but mint, and sold it on for same! so if you fancy it maybe you should haggle. best of luck

Thanks for the feedback lads - like you say parts (slipped my mind) would certainly be a problem........the asking price in light of this does appear to be high even if it is all singing and dancing as he says it is.........

I remember getting one when they came out; it was my first proper light line reel (back in the days when we all fished the shore with Abu 9000's loaded with towrope & my 7000 was my "casting" reel loaded with 20lb).

It was a cracking little reel, far ahead of anything similar sized - but pretty primitive compared to todays reels. If I remember right the adjustment to the mag was made with a coin to the wide-headed screw on the side - none of that adjusting mags mid cast! Construction was absolutely solid though & I used mine without complaint till I wrapped in fishing late '83....sadly sold it off a year or two later.

I'd say £110 is way over the top; as mentioned above £60 or so sounds a much more realistic price, I'd certainly pay that for a good one. Just found these images on google for those who might be curious...
