penn fathom 15 brakes.

Been using these a couple of seasons now and found 2 on 4 off work best. A small dab of glue on the 4 off stops them re-engaging as you'll find if you don't after a couple of sessions and you take the end cap off you'll notice 1, 2 or even all brakes have re-engadged.

In these times of mag reels it is easy to forget that braking a reel spool is about a lot more than just the blocks. Bearing oil and line level also play a crucial role and what works for one person (2 on 4 off for example like Dale) might not work for you if you have thinner oil in the bearings and keep your line level up to the spool lip...

ill try it tomorrow , id rather start with a few too many as too less , line at £10 a spool isn't to be wasted . the reason I got rid of 2 mark 2 525 mags , just 1 click too less and it would blow up , 1 too many and the cast would slow right up . thought I go back to brake blocks and settle for a level keel . hopefully. :D

hi stewart changed the oil over in all my reel to rocket fuel and a lighter line 18lb with no problems, then again I am not a super caster best for the lad to block one at a time until he is happy, that's why I got the new penn mag 2 so you just turn the control knob on the side until you are happy .
and not having to unscrew the reel plate to get at the brake system then put it all back again.
again your advice is spot on

I'm using 1 block in a fathom 12 standard and find it ok tends to flare up a bit when lead starts to slow down towards end of cast or if wind slows it down, but a slight thumb of spool controls it easy.....if I had a mag fitted I probably wouldn't have any engaged would be too slow....as with a penn mag 2 its important to run in from new to get best performance :) also headwind obviously affects the amount of braking you need too.
