and had a hold of the daiwa saltist:o:o:o what a lush reel! dead light smooth
as silk and according to the guy behind counter whom which i trust its probebly

I would say they are as good in a fishing situation casting with bait as the mag. But the mags would have the edge on the field due to less friction and being able to turn the mags off during the cast.

The spool on the fathom is the same set up as the mag it sits on 2 bearings and the spindle goes through the middle.

The break blocks are on a spring system and they pop out to slow the reel when the centrifugal force is great enough for them to do so. you can selection all of them out or none. I have 2 adjacent blocks out in mine and have the spool tension 3 clicks up from 0 tension and its pretty lively at times but controllable.

It holds same amount of line as the 525 so its a bigger spool than the 515 but the fathom is very smooth to wind and the power handle and drag system is solid.

A pair of them is currently on my hit list for the near future.

Mag reels don't blow my skirt up for fishing - the mag reels I own are left at a certain (low) setting and never touched, making magnets more or less academic to me.

Note that I said "academic to me" which does not include everyone else - particularly owners and satisfied users of mag reels !

I thought I'd get that one in before I get stoned in the village square as a heretic...

I fully appreciate and admit that's down to me for not using mag reels as they are are intended to be used, but that's not about to change any time soon so there we have it.

By and large my criteria is relatively simple for distance fishing - anything that casts like an Abu Rocket only built stronger is pretty much what I look for. Nobody ever grumbled that the Rocket couldn't cast a long way, even without magnets, but they are a little undergunned for the sort of fishing I tend to do. Either that or I'm just too kack handed with them

The Penn Fathom 15 has been winking at me for a while now, since it seems to tick the necessary boxes.

I'd be interested to hear your views if you take the plunge :)

i tried the fathom 15 out yest morn brimmed up with ,37 dia line used 7 ounces of lead.

i had four brake blocks engaged at first no prob then just used two, no birdies was going to try just one block but couldnt be bothered, was clearing 200 yds so i would say possibly on par wth original penn 525 it all depends.

very quite going out and reeling in very quite.

definately holds more line than a penn 525.

they have a very good drive system on them diff to other reels.

handle wise for reeling in a bit too big for me but most i think will like the handle.

imho a better reel than the penn 525 but they also cost more.

Check them out on penn website mate you can compare them to the penn 515/525 mag2 which are marketed in the states as the squall 12/15.

The 525 mag2 holds the same line as the fathom 15

Cheers
Davey.
