Penn Squidder,a dinosaur still alive

Hi fellas,
Is there anyone of you still using this strong and reliable reel for surfcasting?
A long time updated technology,but if you have a well educated thumb and practice,my God, how good it works! Richard

Yes they do cast well but the problem is when you come to reel in they are very slow and lifting fish shocking:

I`ve a penn sea boy,no modern stuff such as brakes! but i can cast with it as far as any of my modern reels.Reteieve is very slow though.I once caught a massive ball of weed which caused the spool to part where the two halfes are placed together next to the two holes where you tie your line through the spool,took the spool out,drop of super glue and back in the water-no bother!!

Just googled penn sea boy,a slightly more modern version is still available for about £55.

my mate had a penn squidder,and a boat rod,he used to fish the end of shields pier,casting towards the north pier,he said he used to get snagged around the end of the north pier when the tide came in

The last time i used one of these was about 1976.
As said above,good casting reel but very slow retrieve.

146m was the wide reel with metal spool 146 had plastic 140m narrow reel with metal spool the 140 plastic was the casting reel you could ajust the speed by filing the air brakes down i have had a few spools explode when reeling big fish in and did they explode with such a bang

I think you're a little confused

The 140 was the wide reel with bakelite spool with air brake fins (2 spools)
The 140M was the same as above with metal spool (1 spool)
The 146 was the narrow reel with the same spool differences as the 140 and 140M
And there was another model,the 145 (the spool width was between the 140 and 146).This model was available just a few years.The latest Squidders before they were discontinued had alloy spools (1),black side plates instead of the classic maroon ones and flat handle instead of the classic torpedo ones. I use to put some dacron first on the bakelite spool (10-12 mts) and after load it with Sufix XL strong 0.35 mm (a low stretch mono) and never had a problem of spool exploding even with big fishes
