i have a grauvell witch lm sure like the same reel , and the only thing i dont like is some times when the spool is fully out an the bailing arm is clicked over if the line spills off the spool it gets wrapped around the body under the spool .not really a big deal you just have to take the spool off ,it may happen with other reels as well ? apart from that i cant fault mine , hope this helps

I have the 850, and it works ok. the larger spool allows the line to run off freely. I've got 85lb braid running straight through and use longer rig bodies rather than a shock leader. Personally I would get a multiplier they're much easier to cast and stronger. I use an abu 6500 with the mags and brakes off and just listen to the line, but with the mags on fully you would have to cast and put the rod down and walk away to get over run, then this would be minimal

i think the main thing to remember with an egg beater reel is to have a metal spool , the line comes off it so much better than the plastic ones
the distance is not bad with an egg beater but a finger cover for the finger holding the line is needed for big casting distances ( rubber glove finger cut off or some bike inner tube is needed to save the finger from cutting when the line slips ( i tighten clutch right up to cast and then set it for fishing each time to try and cut slippage )

If you do decide to go for a fixed spool reel i cant see anything wrong with the Surfmaster 850, i have one and im amazed at the distance for a fixed spool. Personally i use 525 mag extras (my first multi)- when i first started with a multiplier i was ready to pull my hair out because of the birdsnest's but i eventually got used to them and would never go back!

When you have a go next time, tighten things up and have a gentle lob building up gradually and loosening off. It will not be long before the fixed spool is out of your mind.

I only use a fixed spool because I have it, but I would rather have a multiplier. Each time I use it I come back with a hugh gash on my index finger where the finger stall falls off or I forget to put it on.
