petrol v diesel...inboards v outboards

good solid boats though, i went to factory a few years a go and seem them being made, they are more of a commercial quality boat, the finish is nowhere as good as the the likes as Slinkey

If it`s a trail boat bob then yes outboard (just makes it that bit easier for the theives to take it) but if its a long stayer in marina then still go for deisel, inboard, shaft. The red deisel will not affect really for a couple of years yet and even then drop for drop even at same taxation deisel goes a lot further ................

ps I know Nov is the Tax day for red but not if you`ve already bought and stored it or if you just want to warm the cabin, and no-one can tell by sample unlike cars if you`ve paid tax on it cos its the same stuff. eventually there`ll be a way maybe you have to keep a receipt (but I dont get out much these days so the 5 litres I pay tax on and keep the receipt for will probably last me 10 years)

good luck mate, interesting and informative thread.

Seriously, I think I`d still go deisel (same as is) if I were starting a clean sheet right now for same kind of fishing. However, if I were to trail it around the country then I think the extra oomph of speed on unknown waters would be preferred to against the base cost of running.
But one things for sure i`d have the BEST model outboard on the market - for safety or maybe smaller twins which take all the safety (breakdown) problems away - other than running out of fuel that is LOL :)

Don't talk to us about legs Norman lol, just been giving Bert a hand putting Shady's back on. Not the easiest of tasks lol.

Best of talking to Bert about the Arvor Bob, I'm pretty sure the owner is selling though.

is that keith ex of shadow?

Aye Keith legs .... aaaaarg you just got to look in any boatyard and 50% of boats with legs dont have them on cos they`re away being serviced or repaired. I used to have an Icelander with inboard 2ltr BMW on a leg and it was crap, forever changing the joint and bellows, also seized up main bearings once at sea and came back on a 4hp outboard.

hows shady coming along?

To be honest Norman, probally one of the only things thats keeping my mind still open to diesel is your boat, its been incredably reliable and depreciation is minimal, i realise that thats mainly down to how you look after her and have her regulary serviced, she looks as good as the day you got her.....unlike us !!! haa haa, seriously though having been out with you many times, and on an epic journey i know what she's capable of, hence thats what i want, the only deciding factor is as per the topic, petrol or diesel

It's out the water and in the boat club if you wanna a butchers, we should be over there through the week working on Shady.

Our old 1998 force 75hp 2 stroke certainly like's the juice.

Say we went out to our favourite wreck at about 10 miles out and back again , going almost straight as the crow fly's at around 18 knots. We would on average use 9 - 10 gallon of petrol + 2 stroke oil mix !!!

If we have a good run about visiting a few marks we can use a lot more.

Can anyone give rough diesel costs for running an arvor 85hp.

Cheers
Martin

Martin, I dont have the log book with me at home but I do log fuel usage and catches/crew religously, (I think more as a laugh to read later when the weathers too bad to get out). If my memory serves me correctly and I`ll edit this if i`m incorrect, but the all up usege for my boat from 1999 till now bearing in mind I dont do much under 20kts is about 1.2 miles per litre ie approx 6 miles per gallon.
So If I were to do same journey you suggest of 10 mile straight out and 10 mile straight back i`d probably use about 3.3 gallons ie 17 litres and at the current price of about 65p/litre (not sure just recentlly how correct that is) would cost me £11.05. I`m sure if I dropped speed a little I could improve this by a factor of at least 30% ........
Even if tax was full on red diesel the consumption would be the same just the price would be about 1.12/litre (guess) ie £19.04 as opposed to your figure of 10 Gal at 1.08/ltr ie £54.00 (plus 2 stroke oil) certainly makes a big difference not just the price of the fuel but the actual consumption.

My figures are based on 21 ft Ocqueteau, with 115HP Volvo Penta Deisel, shaft drive, generally 3 people fishing and an average wreck to wreck speed of about 20kts. (I`ve heard it can go slower but never found the need) :) :) :)

As an average I have a 90 litre tank that I usually fill to top at beginning of the day,we fish from 5am till usually about 2pm and usually use 3/4 of the tank (depending on how hard we have to search for fish that is).
Of course the beginning of the season drifting at St Marys is a dream on consumption LOL 6 trips on a tank ;)

Hope this helps

cheers mate,

Norm

....and if you didn't carry as much hooch you'd get even more economy :D

Cheers Norman,
I like the pici with top hats and mustashes aboard, put hartlepool's duty free boat to shame.

We're seriously thinking about getting a little arvor diesel.

Aye Martin, it`s a bit of an outlay in the beginning but now I simply couldnt afford the petrol to do the miles I do if I had an outboard.
plus the fact that its virtually electrics free so if it`s going it tends to keep going ................

good luck

Norm

Yes Martin I must agree, this is the pic I think you mean LOL ;)

Alright Lads,

Not been on for a while, had to sell my Arvor due to personal reasons, IMine had the 85hp Nanni, and miles per gallon after research is the same as a four stroke outboard around 115hp mark, cost of red makes it attractive.

Bob the Raider 605 pilot house is well worth a look for value for money,

Will be getting another boat soon,

All the best for the season

Adam
