alreet lads, does anyone know if you can still get yourself a few mussell for bait, down at sandpoint, or anywhere else down the wear, as my 14 year old son wants to pick or collect his own bait, as he hasnt quite got enough beef on him to undertake some digging yet with father ! lol any help appreciated regards korky :)

cheers for that matey, i will tell the boyo he will be well chuffed at being able to get himself some bait for the price of a bus fare, and you never know could come back with a fish for tea, so thanks again bud, appreciated korky.

No bother mate glad to help, Hope he has fun collecting...its the shelling thats the nightmare lol

muscle down sandpoint is mall and has been hammered best of going next to stadium of light much bigger mate and much more

he might struggle with these size tides and plus down by the staduim are big boulders and slippy and are right next to the rivers edge so be careful try on bigger tides where ya wont need to be as close to the water

Its easy mate, stick them in the freezer for an hour before shelling them, they come out much easier and better not like snot. ;)

I wish I read this last night before I spent 4 hours shelling muscles lol such a tedious job, my first time doing this and I didn't realise how long it would take with the amount I had. By the end I was wishing I'd just bought frozen ones from the bait shop!

I've also been interested in finding some mussels during my trips to the NE.
I stay with family in the Blyth area... any recommendations?

know the feeling mate nowt worse than spending hours shelling them but when you see how much bait you get from them its well worth it.

cheers lads, my lads got a long way to go yet as a hardened sea angler, but advice and help like this goes a long way to a better future, not only that it will save some of his hard earned pocket money buying worms all the time lol, so big thanks to all, and best wishes for the season to be jolly, regards Bri (korky).

Used to shell loads in my youth when match fishing for coalies on Roker or the South pier, regularly used to shell 10lb a match. The late, great Jack Melton showed me how, its all about the knife you use and where to make the incision ;)
