Yup...I will second that, regarding Blyth pier...I have always regarded It being very productive the hour before and the hour after low water.

Does that mean the Mackerel Bashers stay away at those times? or does it mean they just go right to the end and get in the way?
wallsendo its the time of the year for makeral so obviousy the piers gonna be busy..if ya dont like fishing in crowded areas try further north or som of the rock marks..any tide...the piers are hard work ....lol....try casting off a cliff at marsden...hard work all day gotta coalie like so at least a caught something

Wallsendo...I must admit that the low water fishing on blyth pier I was thinking of are more winter related..apologies...but I'm wishing my life away thinking of the winter cod..I'm even sitting tying traces now in anticipation..

I have been told by Jim and others that Blyth is a bit of a hotspot in the winter....
What kind of rigs are you putting together for the winter cod? and what kind of distances do you chuck your lead?

yes Wallsendo...Blyth can be one of the many so called... hotspots in the winter, but can also look absolute perfection in regards to conditions, but still fail to produce the goods,(thats fishing I suppose..) Winter gone was poor but mainly due to what seemed to be everlasting westerlys. My rigs...I use Pennel pulley rigs using a 4/0 first hook and 2/0 second, just my preference,

Distance is'nt really a factor, wind direction and positoin on pier are. I only fish the pier on either a southeasterly or after big northerly. On a northerly fish as far up the pier as possible and try from in between piers to a southerly direction funnily enough always had better fish through the day, on a southeasterly fish no farther than the bend at night time. In my opinion and it's only my opinion you can't do much better than a one up one down rig. Bait- you can't go far wrong with lugworm tipped off with razor/clam/sqid yi nah whitebait.
