oright guys, im an out and out carp angler when it comes to fresh water fishing.

years ago when i was a kid i used to do a bit of pikeing with dead baits and lures etc.

with the sea fishing being bad as to no northerlys etc me and me pal are gunna give the pike ago this week end. ive got some wire traces n bits n bobs n no ow to set traces up n that.

what a was wondering is what are the best dead baits this time of year?

ive got some makerel in freezer , also i no of lamprey being good.

do small whitings work for pike? or am i better off sticking to fresh water dead baits such as roach etc.

cheers.

will strugle to get small brownies mate, just wondering wether to go with the smelly sea dead baits such as makerel whiting etc or go for the roach etc

cheers

I consider Gudgeon the best dead bait by far but they are hard to come by at this time of year. Bluey or mackerel strip covered in pilchard oil works a treat aswell.

I've been piking today, took my 4 year old and friend and his son. None had caught pike before. I know a good runs water in Scotland and we landed 8 jacks. We caught on mackeral, pollan, herring and sardine.

You can't go wrong with morrisons sardine, Fresh is the key, and maybe roach.

been pike fishing a few times, used the lot. pike don't really care they aint fussy. but anything smelly is ur best bet of drawing them in on the scent.

cheerslads, il just be going to a club stretch on the tees. will get some sardines etc

If your fishing a river, I would imagine you will be roving. Get something that will cast out a few times like roach or smelt. lamprey even.
I fish still waters and sit on my baits which makes sardines ideal.

thanks jim got some small fresh whitings to av a go with.

and dont sit on them sardines for too long the scales are a bugger to get off ;)

Best bait by far for catching pike is a live bait, roach, perch, trout, anything that wriggles basically, failing that, or if it's banned  lamprey is a great bait. Most fish baits will catch pike , you can buy all kinds of frozen baits from a decent tackle shop , including trout ;).
I'm not too experienced on rivers but the fish I have caught on rivers have been caught on the same baits that work in stillwaters.
Don't worry about using sea fish as bait though, like big tel says, pike like a mackerel tail and they are easy to hook and cast , don't throw the head away though , I've had days when I've had so many runs I've ran out of bait and used the heads , which worked just as well ;).

cheers lads. got some roach, lamprey sections. small whiting and some makerel. will let yas no how i get on , first pike sesh for over 10 years!

no good

no good

well me and a pal walked 2 different stretches of river armed with roach, lamprey, makerel and whiting dead baits and both blanked. got a couple of dips on the float first thing this morning but then nothing after that. seen a couple of lads who had landed 2 or 3 small jacks.

still enjoyed it.

If I have a day's pike fishing organised, I normally travel. Scotland or the lakes.
