Postal Strikes

Why are business types whingeing about not getting cheques through the post quick enough? Surely the cheques they had written were taking just as long to reach their destinations. Or have I missed something

Ian, it is not such a problem for big business. A handful of cheques can mean the difference of staying in business or going bust to a small business man mate. There is a massive difference between the two. All it takes is the bank to look on your case unfavourably and you are finished.

Jim.

I was thinking if your debits aren't reaching you then surely your credits aren't reaching them. If a minor blip in the postal system is enough to bring businesses down then what does that say? The business community cuts it's own throat because they can't be arsed to wait a day or to for the lucre to arrive.

I know what you mean Ian but a lot of small businesses don't use a lot of cheques to pay for materials but they usually get payed by cheque. My mate is a builder and he normally uses cash for everything but doesn't often receive it. If he has been working on a long term contract and the payment is held up it can often mean a visit to the bank or can mean no payment for the lads that do work for him. When that happens they don't want to work for him again, vicious circle comes to mind mate.

Jim.

Ya not rang there mate, we are waiting for loads of things that were supposed to arrive over the last couple of days and have not. Sadly none of them are cheques lol.

Jim.

being self employed its not the few days delay from the postie in delivering cheques that concerns me, its the multi million blue chip corporations that think 30 days means 4 months, and actively discourage there accounts departments from paying out on time, and the refusal by their chronies in govt to get em to buck their ideas up.

a lot less 'small guys' would fail through cashflow problems if there was a legal obligation to pay your fecking bills on time rather than hope they'll go bust so you can get away without paying and instead buy all the shareholders another pink gin with the money

not so bad doing what I do now though, I just turn off their mailservers. amazing how utterly reliant business has become on it

money doesnt really bother me,its just when im skint ,bills need paying and carnt meet the demands that worries me,but apart from that im happy fishing when i can lol

Lol I know what you mean, I havn't been able to fish since June and don't know when or if I will be able to again. Do I not miss it, especially when reading the catch reports on here mate.

Jim.

Not really mentioned it much on the forum mate, got a collapsed disc and my spine is badly damaged. I go in for an op on my neck on Thursday morning, just hope I get a wee bit of improvement as most of my body has either numbness or pins and needles and I can hardly walk.

Apart from a hospital appointment I havn't been out of the house for almost three weeks now, starting to look forward to the op now lol.

Jim.

I'm still waiting on payment from News International (News Of The World) from MARCH yet at ten to six on a Saturday they are screaming at me for pics telling me they have a deadline.

...30 days means 4 months, and actively discourage there accounts departments from paying out on time...

:red:...saying nowt LOL :o as I run the Purchase Ledger (Payable) for a large construction company. Although in fairness we do try and pay our suppliers on time. My last company did, however, actively discourage us from paying on time which, as you can imagine, makes for a lot of snotty phone calls :(

For example - having umpteen millions to pay out then setting us a budget of only 500k...

That's the problem with PLCs - it all about the money

PS - hope it goes Ok Jim
