Can anybody explain to me where todays sea has come from, the weather forecast states W and SW winds, and theinshore waters states the same, although warns about strong winds. However, this afternoon there was a lovely lazy swell hitting the beach. Where has it come from and why?

the swells that hit our shores are mostly from storms way up north mate, big low pressure north of scotland will push swells all the way down our coast,

A Phil says the inshore waters/local weather forecast dont show the full picture, a big low pressure system up above Scotland, turning into Northerlies will push a big swell down to us even if we have westerlies forecast locally. Magicseaweed shows this well on its wind maps, although at the moment we are looking at a spell of settled weather on its way, should keep the boaties happy!. Another month & we'll be wanting those arrows pointing downwards (couple of links attached)
