problems viewing board

Any one else having problems viewing the site.

Normally I don\'t have to log in to view it as I can do so as a guest but for some reason today I have to log in every time, has anything changed?

Ermmmm......yep......my fault, I\'m afraid.

Well not \"fault\"......more of a regretable, but necessary decision.

I\'ve made the forums viewable only after log-in.

This is something I very much regret having had to do because (as you know) many of out members were former \"lurkers\" who regularly read the posts before taking the plunge and deciding to register as a member.

However, a certain Ex-member was still able to access the forums and whilst not being able to post his comments on the Board, was e-mailing some members on a regular basis regading what they had posted.

I know that this has caused a bit of concern to those who have recieved e-mails from him - those who have will know who I\'m talking about and the sort of \"comments\" he\'s been known to make. Many of those longer standing members who haven\'t received e-mails from him, will still know who I\'m talking about.

Hopefully, whilst this measure is regretable, it may not be too long before something is sorted out on the site so that there can be BOTH non-member accessible areas as well as areas only accessible via log-in.

In the meantime, apologies for the inconvenience of having to log-in every time you want to view the Board.

Lol.....\"modern\" technology, eh?

Time we had a new, more up-to-date & secure Board, methinks :casstet: :casstet:

Hope to be looking at that in the not too distant future ;)

The trouble is Tony the \"Remember me\" part of the User Login process is somewhat erratic for some it works for others it doesn\'t. It used to work for me but now it doesn\'t. So I just visit the forum, browse, but don\'t login unless I have something to say.

If users are having problems with one person sending them abusive emails then they should take steps through their ISP to report the person for abuse also they could but his email in their spam trap.

The problem we have now is that the \"5H1T\" who is causing the problem is winning, and, will probably be smiling from ear to ear with the bother he is causing.

Sorry TC but I agree with Chris, this now puts board out of touch for me at times ....... it`s work policy not to log on to sites

He does have a very good point TC ,I don\'t know how tricky it would be to bar someone\'s I.P. as a guest ,not easy I would imagine if not impossible.

1st off....if the person in question IS still able (like Mark) to view the forums without logging in, I agree - he will be smiling from ear to ear (whether that\'s round his face or over his head, I don\'t know - or care), but if he can\'t then I think this (hopefully) temporary measure will have been worth it.

2ndly......banning an IP address is easy.....BUT...... you\'ll find that most users do not have a static IP address. Each time you go on the \'net you get allocated an IP address - chances of getting the SAME one you\'ve had previously are pretty remote. So banning 1 IP address is futile.

Infact - a couple of years ago, I blocked 1 IP address (or so I thought - turned out I\'d banned several people from the Board inadvertently.......the whole block of IP addresses used by the same ISP ended up being blocked.)

Static IP address tend to be found more in the workplace - where a check on each employess internet activity can be monitored.

3rdly.....yes people can report such unwanted e-mails - they can also just use the \"block sender\" facility in their \'net browser. By preventing access to the forums by un-registered users, I was hoping to be able to eliminate the problem at the source - ie picking up on what registered members have posted.

Lastly.....Such a route (log-ins only), is one I\'ve NEVER wanted NESA to go down because we get a lot of new members who have initially been \"lurkers\" and decided to take the plunge and register. However, there are many sites where un-registered users can view all the sections of the site, EXCEPT the forums - to do so, you HAVE to register.

As I\'ve said.....I anticipate that this current arrangement on NESA will only be temporary. I\'ve discussed this problem with Elton and we are hoping to be upgrading NESA over Christmas.

Hahahaha....Norman, I\'ve just posted in Berts\' \"full house\" topic in Shore Fishing..........the \"log-in only\" set up IS NOT a recruitment drive.......HONEST......lol

I\'m sorry to add to your problems TC but if you are referring to the person I think you are.... he is a member, but under a different log in to the previous username, (and has been for sometime) He just doesn\'t bother to post as his distinctive writing style would give him away. He will still be able to read stuff.

As per previous messages in this thread...why not block e-mails if it\'s that upsetting...? I agree with Norman, sometimes it\'s good to read this site in your lunch break etc whilst at work....not possible for those with strict IT policies now.

So, Plan B...?

Jeff.

Ps...not trying to pick a fight with anyone here....just trying to explain how futile recent changes will prove to be.

I think I once had an email from the person u have refered to but it was not abusive. I just see the name appear from time 2 time. I login from home and dont have a prob with the current sit. but hope it all gets sorted.

I think broadband users will always have the same IP (unless you change it manually) but dial up gets a new IPA everytime it dials a con.
