Pulley problems

Hi guys,

I have problems some times when using pulley rigs and bait clips.... there are occasions when they just don't seem to release and the whole rig comes back as it went out.....

Any ideas? Snood too long or short etc....

Any help would be great,

Thanks Marc

Mainly a Gemini devil? Think thats what they are called. Either that or a ot of my grip leads have a bait clip hook built into them.....

Try leaving line slack for 2 - 3 minutes give hook time 2 release before tighting line up after cast this will also help your sinker bed in and less chance of tide pulling it round hope this helps if not invest in some imps they never fail ;)

Are imps the Gemini ones? If so then that's what i'm using! lol

Always thought I left the line long enough in the water before tightening up but might try a bit longer. Does the height you cast help? (ie: a high cast means the lead will hit the sea bottom better kicking off the hook?

Aye sorry Louis, I ment the breakaway ones.....

They seems to work fine if I test them out on dry land and eject the hook each time but I have struggled on the last couple of trips out with them not kicking the hook free....

I can't offer much advice really as I never use pulley rigs, but if you look on the Breakaway website it says that Imps are not deigned for use on pulley-type rigs; maybe this has something to do with the problem? I use Imps on most of my clip-down rigs of varying types & never had any bother with them either (apart from when they made that "design change" a while back - luckily I had a stock of the old ones that lasted until they reverted back to the old design).

P.S. Hers's the page from their site - description has changed slightly but they do refer to an "extreme imp" for pulley-style rigs - might be worth a try?

Is there any other way of clipping down a pulley rig then other than the impact shield? Guess I will have to use the imps with other rigs then....

personally i dont rate those imps had a few pennel rigs come back still clipped up , only use impact shields now as never let me down

LOL Mark!! I know the feeling mate! Still waiting on my coddys! Seem to be catching everything but cod at the moment!

I will try the extra length on the snood and see if that works, I probs do have it a bit tight and if it was looser then it might eject off the clip easier.... if not then I guess im chucking the imps and buying some impact shields!! :D

cheap lead links work for me mate never had problems with imps either strange as they always release on my pullys the gemini lead links are the best in my eyes cheap and if u have a problem releasing just straighten the little curved over bit out a litttle. and i use nothing but pulleys for cod

I use pulley rigs for mixed/clean ground most of the time,I build my rigs with no swivels and little hardware as possible using 100lb line knotted up to 60 or 80lb hook line.

For the hook clipdown I tried impact shields...great for release but when reeling in they could cause snagging and also if fishing down Holderness flat sandy beaches they would feel line pulling a plough back over the sand bars.

When the imps came onto the market I tried them.....brilliant piece of clever clipdown device and worked every time, then after about a year later when building new pulleys with them I found they would release in mid flight when checking the fault I found they just snapped in half and disappeared from the metal clip,I contacted brakeaway and I know they changed the plastic mould material for some reason maybe to save money.
I binned all the new imp clips but I believe now as someone has said they now back on the market..extreme imps.hahaha.
The problem I found if you just use bent u wire as a clipdown is then in strong cross winds or say fishing the river when the flow is strong they will just not release because the cross wind keeps pressure on the rig in a big bow of running line then when it hits the water its then under pressure with the line still bowed and under tension.
Pulley rigs are great and I'm building again with imps but I also use other rigs to suit the conditions I'm fishing in.

Yeah that sounds like the problems I have been having Harry cheers. Been either windy or river marks where I have had the issues..... will try them again before tossing them in the bin lol
