well r we ready for our winters fishing my mate fishing off seaham hall the other night 9 sizeable whities, has anyone elase heard of things picking up?? , time to sort gear out for winters assault ,reel servicing checking rod rings, headlights, boots and acceseries now is the time to sort a few things out especialy rigs, must try tiger prawns out again this season first time i used them first cast actualy a good cod in febuary going to try them though mainly in rough weather,good time now also to stock freezer up while bait is still readily available, squid, razors, prawns , runnydown,crab, mackeral , some people start there winters cod bash in november sept and october can be exceptional in the right conditions, i am starting to get ready now for the next 6 to 7 months
 
aye John every things ready for the winter assualt m8,summers nearly over the winds will pick up soon :) roll on the winter ;)
looking forward to this years campaign,have a few new marks that i want to try,COME ON THE WIND :D
 
Not for all of us, cold north winds, undersize bait robbing fish, endless weed and lost gear, chasing lugworm stocks around the tackle shops,parking in bed areas where your car might be attacked, risking life on rocks and cliff tops and all for maybe 1 or 2 good sized cod a winter..nar keep them west winds coming :)
 
richy maybe 1 or 2 good sized cod if you fish the pier all the time but if you get out there and fish the rock ends you might actually enjoy your fishing as theres some decent fish to be had if you work for them.
as for chasing lugworm stocks round the shops,i have access to lug all the time and i only went digging half a dozen times last season.
used all frozen stuff the rest of the time and had plenty codling on that.

Big hooks, big baits, big seas.......hopefully big fish, too......lol

Driving home from work in the dark (and it\'s only 5:00).....snow flurries, icy winds......anticipation of a nights fishing ahead......thermal undies, full floatation suit on, head torch fully charged, baiting up a 4/0 Viking with mussel, lug & squid, resulting in frozen fingers - the smell of the hot coffee when you open the flask for the 1st time, eagerly awaiting that nod-nod-nod-STRIKE!!

Yep another 4 weeks or so and we will be into them!
Richy,1 or 2 decent cod is a good catch that requires thought and knowledge of conditions/marks.As for the weed and lost tackle,it goes with the territory.Anyone can turn up on a pier and throw spinners/daylights at suicidal mackeral.No skill involved there!

Richy you must lose gear on the boat when you are fast on the bottom,a decent rotton bottom (Cannylinks off Hiram lol) off the rocks and you only lose your sinker :D
to be honest I do like to fish for Mackerel on a summers night,if its quiet !
 
to right gogs, its all about the challange you just never know whats out there realistically anyone can go out on a boat and catch good fish but from the shore its a different thing. Really looking forward to this years fishing big efforts for that big fish.

and no women to try and put the block on lol

I used to fish twice a week every week in the winter, had cod upto 10lb 8oz fromt he shore and bass upto 4lb during the winter months but now i have seen the light, just not for me anymore...as for skill its still alot of luck, once your on a mark if a cod is in your area it will take your bait,simple as, i took my cous fishing from hill 60 at seaham last year i had 1 rockling, 1 codling to 2lb and a colie, he had a 4lb codling and a flounder using my gear, my tackle and my bait ,myPoint is cod,mackerel,whitng,etc...anyone can catch them if they got the , its a gamble picking your mark,sometimes the conditons are spot on for the black path but Newbig beach fishes or bogg hall is unfishable and you go to second choice mark and have a fantasic sesh, right gear/bait and the fish are feeding at the mark your on.

This could go on for ever as i have my opinion and wont back down and others have theres, like i said i seen the light after 19 years winter fishing. Ill still fish the odd time during the winter but it wont be the 30times + that i used toofish 3 years ago...i just dont find it interesting sitting waiting for bites on a cold windy night anymore.

The poor reports and everyone twisting last year aboit poor ctach reports,poor sea states and so on has just aided in me turning my back on winter fishing.

Bring it on....all the fair weather anglers gone, freezing yellow iodine stained fingers, that unmistakable thump thump on your rod tip, watching the horizon disappear as snow flurries approach you - heaven. :D
 
Try getting yourself 3 kids and a wife Richy..........

You\'ll be glad of the piece and quiet sitting waiting for bites on a cold windy night :o ;)
 
Ah,so the likes of Chris Stringer,Tony Taylor,Alec Harvey etc etc etc are not really good anglers with knowledge of where to fish and when.They are just lucky?
 
I\'m with you Gav. Knowledge has a huge effect on your success rate. By knowledge I mean, what marks fish on what time of the tide, size of the tide, different sea conditions, different baits, weather....the list goes on and on. I think it accounts for about 95% of your success rate.

No question Davy,and not just where to fish but how to fish it on any given day.I fished over 100 matches last year from Hull-Arbroath on the east Pwelli-stranraer on the west and the same names pop up again and again,to say the lads who done well in them got lucky is a no go.
