rag worm

Must admit every season i say i am going to dig/collect my own and never do.
:(

i put it of sometimes and just buy them but as its been said , sometimes there not worth the money so next time i just dig them :) worth the effort all ways get decent ones that rear up and try and bite ya ;)

prob is not everybody has the time to dig and not everyone is capable of digging.

come the winter months wont be long, one weekend you get a stir up sea dyes away tides are small very little about i think most of us would be pleased with anything ita bit of a scenario.

to be honest shops can only sell what they get delivered, its very frustrating for anglers bait but for shop owners also cant be easy some people like big worm some like small how do you please everyone.

I'ts all about the diggers really, some shops have good diggers some not so good,
The Friarage (100 yards from me :D) has some of the best worm i've seen, they show you before wrapping them and ask if they're ok...had some bloody monsters off them recently
It's not about size, it's about how fresh and lively they are, i've had some lately that i've had to snap into three ! I would rather have 5" worm all day than bloody snakes

ragworm waiting for the flack here but i just dont have any confidense in it except for some fish ie plaice and boat fishing but for winter cod fishing give me lugworm everytime.

think myself confidense is a big factor and i am not confident using it but hey its everybody to there own.

loads of bait about now obviously but come the dark nights and coupled with the cold weather can beggars be choosers

Hi guys just read over this convo and if you want a decent bag of rag or lug go to frasers angling and outdoors coatsworth road bensham about 5 to 10 mins walk away from gateshead interchange centre these guys are really supportive and will always put you on the right road if they think you might not know something or if they think you might not understand they are always helpful and a canny bunch of lands would advise anyone of attending this shop they also have a wide selection of tackle and anything else you want :)

Completely agree John apart from Bass and Plaice give me Lugworm every time. Been using Runnydown most of the summer because I couldn't get hold of any fresh lug.

As for collecting / digging your own fair play if you are healthy enough / have the time but I live 15 miles from the coast, work full time and have a family. It's difficult enough sourcing fresh bait for a mid-week session, let alone finding time to get to the right place and dig my own.

I have never tried to dig my own bait but would like to find out how to dig my own bait because it will save a lot of money as I do not have a lot to start with but I am part time collage at the moment :s

They're in peat/compost so you're hands end up filthy black with dirt.

Go to Lewis's in W/Bay, all his fresh bait is on display in a glass fronted fridge, so you see what you're getting before you buy.

Not knocking John's stuff at Blyth, just think it's too hit and miss quality wise and you soon get sick of scrubbing your hands for ages when you get home.

recentley fished hollyhead in wales bloke in local tackle shop digs his own never had rag like it nice big lively ones winnies worms if anyone going down that way

well i got some and was shocked at how many were in a packet 11-12 worms small size but they did the job £2 for 11 short ass worms seems a bit steep but if you cant dig them yourself then i guess thats what you have to pay, are sea bait still going btw ? anyway i got out fishing first time in many months thanks to sport and leisure so many thanks hope you keep going for many years to come the wind was blowing a hoolie but managed to catch a few coalies so went home a happy chap cheers batt22

The ONLY thing I miss about fishing on the south coast (well ok not quite only I miss the Smoothhounds as well) is being mates with a digger and getting my ragworm fresh out of the mud for only £8 per lb.

That said fresh lug was impossible to get hold of and while I think ragworm up here is a rip off at £16 to £20 a lb I am happy to pay the £3.80 for a score of good fresh lug. And the general fishing is much much better too, as is being able to fish without pulling in 10 lb of weed on every chuck :o
