hi all,i have been sea angling for 20 years and would like to start getting my fresh water gear after xmas,i was thinking of the basic starter sets and just start off float fishing,is this the way forward for a novice.any advice welcome,lakes,easy fish to start catching,gear advice.cheers

You would be better off buying some quality second hand gear rather than a new cheap set up.You can sometimes get everything you need in one go and save some dosh.
Keep an eye on the likes of Gumtree , theres usually full sets of gear come up on there.

Spring, summer- Angel of the North, Bassett pond, simple float set up light tackle with size 18/16 barbless hook and maggot. Fish 1 a chuck and good chance of a small carp.

You could give the Leazes Park in Newcastle a go, a day ticket will cost you £5 the bits fishing this year has seen some good bags of fish and has improved past every members expectations. There is a club (LPAA) and information can be found on their web site and Facebook.

Id recommend it to any one mate its a great sport fresh water fishing some place hold massive carp they put up a great fight on light tackle I love it me I always slated the fresh water lads with me enjoying sea fishing for so long.been at this fresh water fishing now for 3yr sold all my sea fishing gear as was getting sick of catching small fish and frezzing my nads off every winter. I stared off on floats wich is great to watch it bob under but now my fishing is more relaxed sitting waittin for a bite alram to blair wich some pppl say is boring but u can always set up a float while waiting for bite alarm to go off. Hope you take it up mate its spot on

A bit off topic but I was told that you can fly fish for the Carp at Angel lakes.....Is this true Andy? I fancy some of that if it is.

Think that might be the place opposite mate, fox ponds trout fishery. They have carp in one of the ponds in there.

Cheers Jim, but it is the Angel Fishery. I had a look on the website earlier and it says that on one of the lakes (Bowes Lake) you can fly fish during July and August.
I'm going to pop in and confirm it though.

Let me know what you find out Ian mate, I knew about foxs pond but think theey only have 2 carp in and its so small, ya just gotta flick ya line out or ya over on the otherside lol

Some of what was top of the tree gear 10 year ago, going for silly prices on Ebay !
99% of people will not be able to tell the difference between then, and now, because there isn't much!
Daiwa-Team Daiwa- Daiwa-Connoisseur, Shimano -Twin Power, Tricast, Normark, etc. Will all serve you well, and longer than cheap new stuff !

I know I don't have to say it, BUT, Ebay has loads of tackle going at good prices. Stuff people are selling due to not being able or interested in the sport anymore.

Now, depends on your mental attitude as to what sort of fishing you take up on freshwater.
I have the gamut of most tackle. Float tackle to pike stuff. As well as sea which I have just taken up.
From my perspective the enjoyment of fishing isn't so much in throwing out a line and sitting for hours waiting for a bite alarm or float to signal a fish, it's in hunting them.
Give me a fly rod or a spinning rod every time.
The feeling of having a savage snatch at your lure as it's dragged back slowly to bank is out of this world. A hit by a sea trout on your Toby lure is wonderful and as it rushes off with a mouthful of metal you shake with excitement.
Put on a pair of chest waders and creep slowly upstream hunting out a brownie under a bush and flicking a home made fly to it is far better than sitting for hours with your ipod for company waiting for something that may not happen anyway. Sea fishing is the same but in the winter months the river fishing isn't as easy as when the river runs clear.

A 7' spinning rod and a box of lures is easily carried in the boot of the car and you can go almost anywhere with it and fish at the drop of a hat.
