Record breaking shark off coast of Ireland

Just noticed this article in today's Daily Mail.

A pensioner has landed the largest fish ever caught by rod and line in waters off the British Isles, returning from his fishing trip with a 1,056lb shark. As Mr Waldis, a 70-year-old pensioner, proudly posed for pictures next to his catch, he described his 35-minute battle to haul the shark in as 'the fight of my life'.

Whole artical can be viewed on ........

Fisherman catches record-breaking shark off coast of Ireland - then lands himself an ethical 'throwback' storm | Mail Online

what a total waste never should have left the water,a couple of photos along side boat and then a quick release was the way to go.:mad:

just read another article that said the skipper had returned live an even bigger fish in august last year from the same mark :confused:

I first read the article in Tuesday 23rds issue of Angling Times, well before the nationals used the story.
If the skipper in the past has returned fish he should make it part of the conditions to anglers fishing from his boat that specimen fish such as this should be unharmed tagged if need be and returned.

the only thing that springs to mind about that involves a lot of swearing etc and im not gonna post that on here.

what a joke.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

All I can say is I have a great admaration. Not for the tosser who caught such a magnificant shark, but for all the lads on this site who have refrained from using the language deemed nessaccary to discribe this angler.

****
The other people on the boat are all responsible - the skipper ultimately, he should have guided the quiverring Swiss man and said - "There's no way we can kill this rare, unique and potentially lost and distressed creature, if there's not one of you on this boat with a camera then tough ****. However I am prepared to tow this huge sentient being for a few mile until he / she eventually dies and will stand by while "it" is hauled up on a forklift, not even properly, so a few photys can be taken. Absolutely ****ing disgusting, no ****ing excuse an abomination

Pricks, each and everyone of them on the boat.
They should hang their heads in shame but unfortunately that won't happen and I imagine they will repeat this disgrace again in the future.

Hopefully his inflated ego will force him to search through websites like this to see all the admiring responses to his glorious "catch" (I use the word loosely , in my eyes if you can't lift it out of the water on your own , you havn't caught it) Unfortunately he's 70 years old so not much chance of him learning the error of his ways and doing the right thing next time , any younger anglers reading threads like this though will hopefully realise that such a monstrous act will be seen as a crime rather than a marveloous achievement.
Those involved in its capture should be forced to eat it........all of it... before they are allowed to fish again

The process of killing it and then hauling it ashore to be weighed is deemed necessary to verify the record.
I'm seething, really, this is effing ludicrous. Isn't it about time we had the rules changed for record fish when it comes to vulnerable species like this? Why not length and girth measurements, take a DNA sample from a fin clipping and then tag and release it? This is no better than the old big game trophy hunters lining their walls with the heads of their kills.

Seriously we need to get the rules for records thoroughly revised, they're going against all our best efforts at conservation otherwise.

Paul, how can you possibly compare a 2lb Bass (which will be eaten) and a fish like this? The two things could not possibly be related IMO.

Jim.

I think it comes simply down to the sustainability of the species in question, we have protected bass nurseries and they are bred and farmed in many places, I've also said all along with bass being slow growing that we need to be returning the larger fish to ensure they can breed.

Shark is a different matter, 18-35yrs estimated before a female becomes mature and scientists think a lifespan of upto around 80yrs, 2yrs gestation means they're reproductive rates are very low....

Ah now Paul, that is a completely different post to your first one, You did just fail to mention that you had been lead to believe that it was going to a restaurant. That does make a slightly different story. I very much doubt that it would be going to a restaurant as by the time it was all sorted out by "the powers that be" it would be absolutely minging lol. Do you have a link to the story about it going to a restaurant, I have read a couple of different stories about this (Similar though) and there has been no mention of it being used for food, you never know it could make a difference to some folk :D :D

I have been fishing for over thirty year and have caught a good few Bass over the years but have only ever kept three so I do know all about catch and release. At the moment in the north east there is not a lot of difference now between Bass and Codling in some places, so you would have to include them too :D :D

I still say that to compare the two is very difficult and when he caught it he had no intentions of supplying a restaurant with it either lol. It was all done for "The Record" something that should have gone out years ago. There is a person worse than the guy that caught it though IMO, and that would be the skipper of the boat. I bet it has brought him more bad publicity than good though, I would be disgusted if I was on a boat and the skipper said yes to keeping something like that :casstet: :casstet: :casstet:
