Record breaking shark off coast of Ireland

absolutely no comparison, 2lb bass FFS!

might as well say, 2lb pollack, 2lb codling, 2lb anything. In national terms, there's plenty of bass in our waters still - based on the amount that the southern charter/private boats boats haul in on a regular basis

making a comparision with a 2lb bass and a creature that is so rare there are more of its relatives in the fossil record than there are alive is laughable

and we'll never ever be like the 'coarse guys' till the practice of match fishing is banned or completely turned upside down, there are probably thousands upon thousands of just 'in-size' fish slaughtered every year to make up bag weights, and I bet a very very small percentage of them ever see the table

Fish we see taken on this site though are sustainable and are going to the table (well bar the annual mackeral slaughter by chavs). Shark info I got off a couple of quick googles and the timing of this guys catch couldn't be worse when the IUCN had just announced that we're looking at a potential loss of 30% of shark species...

I think he should be given as much of a hard time as possible, this is not just any other fish, or a fish among loads of others that get despatched every day.

It is an extreme rarity, a one off, to lump it in with 'lots of other fish' shows know respect for the shark in question or fish in general

as willywetegg (jim)'s signature says some people are simply alive cause you cant shoot them defines my feelings towards those ignorant ****s on that boat i hope next time the same shark comes along pulls the ###ers in and enjoys a meal

I feel exactly the same about this as I do when I read through the angling mags and see the pictures of someone holding up a 5lb wrasse or 6lb mullett in someones back garden, when you know the minute the pictrues have been taken, the fish goes in the bin.....

It's maybe as Paul states, that the article only tells half the story and that the fish was then sold on for food to a local restaurant.....But then isn't that then why some commercials have an issue with RSA's when some fish are seemingly being sold for profit.

I like to read the bit where it says the fish was released unharmed in the mags.

With regards match fishing, it's the North East mentality in matches that needs to change. I am aware that the majority of matches further south are CMR, but with such large boundaries up here anlgers can fish where they please, which then creates the problem of how you record the fish

am not jumping on any bandwagon paul, just stating the fact that there is no difference in the shameful waste in this photo to some in magazines where upon something has been killed for nothing more than a couple of photographs or token trophy

As for cmr matches up this way....I don't think I have ever hear of one promoted or organised. We once discussed running an ASAC club match in such a way with a well known match angler heavily advocating the plus points and that it takes true skill to fish insuch a way. The old school types weren't interested though, and things continue as they did. In hindsight as a committee, we should have just told those against the idea, they either fished this way or didnt, fish this match, in which case they would have lost catch total at the end of the season

Funnily enough I was speaking to another NESA member a few months back and we discussed a CMR match over the summer months. No reason why they shouldn't work, it's just a case of people getting used to change.

Like I say, I used to organise one - sometimes two - a week, usually SAMF qualifiers as well as sweepstakes....and they weren't just in the Sunderland area - also had them from the beaches at Lynemouth and Druridge Bay.

They turned out to be very successful too in the end....I even had to disqualify one chap who caught a couple of codling to 6lbs in a match. He knocked 'em on the head and kept them in his bucket - for his tea like....but I said that the rules clearly stated that all fish were to be measured AND RELEASED to the water....he was not pleased I can tell you...
I tried explaining to him what was the point of running a cmr match if anglers were going to kill fish during it....he said I was an idiot if I thought ANY angler would return cod back to the sea....I told him they would in that match....

Lets get one thing straight here - I have said from the start that I personally would have returned the six gilled shark, but thats me - he wasn't breaking any laws, yet he faces a glut of abuse and condemnation....so be it - but I see know difference of killing that shark and someone walking off Roker Pier tonight, with two bin liners filled with mackerel....but again, my opinion.
True - there was no value in killing the shark - but isn't it about time the rules were changed on how records are claimed?
They do it with common skate - they aren't killed and brought back to the local butcher's shop and hung up on scales...they use a length, width and girth measurement - then used against a sliding scale, and are very accurate.
I hope the killing of the shark, may act as a lesson to all, especially those involved with recording record claims...and changes are made.

we as sea anglers are years behind the anglers of the freshwater kind - it's about time we caught up....

Well put Paul......I agree with you on all of that, and hopefully we can get the CMR matches as the norm here one day

personally its very rare a keep the fish a catch, as a fish for the fun and norm only keep fish if they cannot be returned and would never dream of killing somthing just to prove that av caught it or didnt have a camera at the time also for record puposes and wouldnt kill a load of fish just to weigh them in to win a comp(not wanting to cause argument just my opinion) but a think there is a big difference beetween this shark and smaller fish which certain ones might be pretty scarce but compared to this shark are very common. as said though a dont agree with people keepin silly amounts of cod, bass etc even mackerel but there is no law against it, so as long as the fish is of size, not goin to waste and a sensible amount taken a think they deserve a welldone:)

ya nah some folk just like a good debate dont they and wind folk up the fish is dead now so it carnt be undone but cud of been saved but its hes choice hes catch nobody tells you what to put back do they but size limit counts all a choice of the angler IMHO

thats the whole point of forums etc so people can put their views and opinions forward, and am sure most people are grown up enough to be able to discuss things without getting to wound up, people are always gonna have different opinions thats just life:)

i but the fish probs been eat by now restaraunts etc sold on and life still goes on and the fish still talked about its gone dead and sh!t out by now but i bet this still goes on just for the argumentive part of it

I read an article recently where the correspondent was bemoaning the fact that Jersey have introduced a 5 bag limit for bass. I thought a 5 bag limit sounded entirely acceptable, I mean how many bass can you eat in a day, and we are all fully aware that bass are a slow growing species compared to cod or mackeral. It's heartening to read so many posts on here promoting a conservation based catch policy, especially after the furore with licencimg and article 47 where the threat of bag limits had many up in arms

what happend to it.....well on wsf some one from the boat had said that MOST.....that is MOST of it was dumped near the pier .....so what do you think about that .over to you matchman

matchman
wasnt it you who skippered the boat and helped reel the fish in,then hit it on the head with a big priest

you dont half get the blame for some things
hahahahahaha

I'm off to catch 5 bin liners of mackerel now, so when I post it later...I expect at least half a dozen...."Well done mate - great sesh, at least you didn't blank!".....

...

is that all ya gonna target oh welldone from me anyways

just caught up with this one, the whole record system wants revamping, perhaps all boats should carry a camera for catches such as this, i know if i caught that beastie i would not be the one putting it back, i would still be pinching myself an hour later, however back it would go without coming out the water
regarding bass, i took and keep one years ago that was over 10lbs, these days i would take a pic if i had a camera but it would be going back, to be honest it was not the best bass i have tasted - 3/4 pounders are far better, same applies with big fish of any eatable kind, i take enough to feed me and the family and no more, i get a kick out of putting them back - even mackerel, they spoil too quickly on a warm day

dunno bout stringing people up, education would be better, if that dont work then string them up :D

Why on Earth is it "over to me" ??????????

sorry I should have made myself clear. I thought with you working for sea angler magazine you might have used your position to educate people not to kill such magnificent creatures like this shark. Just like those who have worked hard for B.A.S.S. and S.O.S. who have tried to stop pointless killing for no reason other than to get their name or picture in print.

Once again I apologise for being naive
