Reel low down... your thoughts?

I currently have my reel hight up at a arm length. I have toyed around with it low down and have spoken to some lads and they love it... anyway I'm not 100% sure how far off the butt it needs to be aswell. So any advice and opinions will be great :)

About a foot mate

Great, thanks :D do you have it at the bottom?

No mate, always fish reel up apart from the time i slashed my thumb on the shocker knot first chuck. Then had to fish reel down for the first time as blood was ****ing all over the place. It's not bad like, yer can soon get used to it and nearly all the big chuckers fish reel down. I can understand this as your leading hand will only be doing one job, putting power into the punch part of the cast rather than punching and trying to control the spool at the same time. But for my needs reel up is more comfortable and i can still get reasonable distance. If I were to start all over again though it would be reel down.

best to put reel were you comfortable with sometimes i have reel 16 ins up frm bottom some rods i put reel on very bottom .

I had a few casts with the reel a foot from the bottom just to see what it was like it made me think if I had a decent size fish on I would find it difficult to land.
I know a reducer would probably solve that but that seems like a lot of hassle.

A good starting point is the length of your forearm. If you have it much longer than this you can do yourself an injury during the punch pull of the cast.

Leave the reducer in!!

A lot of reducers are too long and need some help from a hacksaw!! you will get used to managing the extra leverage when winding in. I have developed a bigger left bicep over the years but you will eventually find you can lock the rod and your left arm against your hip when winding in.

Hi Chukka,
So yer talking about the distance between the reel and the leading hand I take it?

I've fished reel down for years, my favorite rod at the mo is a 14ft Apollo mk 1, and I have the reel 6 inches up from the butt to take advantage of the rods length and power. As already said it soon becomes second nature to jam the butt into your hip, and actually can give you better control if your landing fish from rocks or a pier as you don't need to step over your rod! The other advantage is you have the option of reaching further up the rod with your lead hand, should you need extra power for a longer cast. It's personal preference at the end of the day mate! Tight lines!

He's talking about the length of your forearm between the butt (Elbow) to the wrist (Start of the reel)

Gives you plenty cranking power still once your used to it.

I've used my in the low down position for around 3 to 4 years now, and my distance casting has only got better and better! :D :)

I use mine around 8 to 10inches from the bottom of the butt, and still get plenty winching power whilst keeping the rod high to hold the big fish (when it comes ;)) away from any snags.

Just put the reel seat down and try it out mate, when it comes to casting and distance, etc, its best to stick to what your comfortable with matey. :)

you will probably find it easier to grip the spool with the reel in the low position as your left thumb will naturaly reach further over the spool than your right one can while reaching up the rod with the reel in the high position . hope you can understand this :)
