Just wondering what everyones views on this.I recently started fishing reel down on my apollo mk1 and me century 216,love the feel of it for casting, seems to soften rod.My worry is that when i hook a decent fish say 5lb plus it guna be hard work getting em in because of leverage, especially rock ends and strong tides, had few coalies using this method and they seem lot heavier wot ya reckon??????

It's personal choice but i personally don't see any difference in reeling in with the reel down or up as long as u don't put the reel right at the bottom (unless a reducer is used). If the rod is the 14ft apollo just place the reel roughly the length of yr forearm from the bottom. That will give u enough leverage to fish comfortable and u'll soon get used to it.

The major difference is that IMO it's easier to get bigger distances when needed

most lads are used to reel down option but some have other option up its just getting used to it in a way

Just do what you are comfortable with Davey, I used to fish some rods with the reel down and others with the reel up. As has been said it is just personal choice.

Jim.

reducer

reducer

most rods that you fish with the reel down have a bit that sticks in the butt to use after casting

I think REDUCER is the word your looking for Alan, I fished this way for a couple of years I just found it a pain in the orifice putting the reducer in & out so went back to the traditional set-up. But I do know what you mean, it does make the rod seem more user friendly if you like.

I always fish with the reel down but i also have my reducers permanently on the rod, ive never had any issues reeling in fish this way. But as said above its down to personal preference and what you are comfortable with.
