Hello boys a bit info needed going to start making my own rigs costing to much to buy bought loads of beads already wot strength lines and bits n bobs will I need obviously hooks I will get cheers boys
I tend to use 80lb for all my rig bodies, even scratching ones. That way they'll take anything from a half ounce rolling sinker to a 7oz gripper, depending on how & where I'm fishing. Thicker rig body also helps reduce tangling, as does heavier hook lengths. Scratching/flatty rigs I'll go for 15/20lb, for cod rigs I use 40 or 50lb hook lengths (Maxima Chameleon for me - very good and tough & stays nice & straight). Hook sizes to match bait & target species.
If you like the rigs you have been buying just copy them Also depends on the marks you fish, You dont want massive beads and swivels if you are fishing snaggy marks so keep them as small as possible, The hooks I always use are sakuma manta extras
silicon crimps are ok but they can still slip under pressure . fine for flappers . but certain clipped rigs under tension can still move it. as line stretch enables the silicon crimp to slide i believe just for info from personal experience.
Scratching I use 30-35lb rig body with 10-20lb hook lengths. Heavy ground fishing 70lb body 70lb hook length. River , mixed or clean ground -60-80lb body 30lb amnesia.
Choosing the right strength, diameter, length and colour hooklength can be the difference between catching fish and blanking.
I make my own and get 90% of my component parts from veals online. Delivery is usually 1-2 days and they're as cheap as chips. Keep a copy of the receipts and once you top £100 in back orders, you can join and get 10% on every order after that.
Mate theres dozens of rigs out there and each person has their favourites. What i did was watch on here who was regularly catchin fish at marks i fished then speak to these fellas about the rigs they were using.
As long as its not durng a competition they were happy to give me a hand and most gave me a rig to copy off.
Your local tackle dealer will help if you tell them what marks your fishin
I use that one quite a lot!! Just got to make sure you tie a proper figure-of-eight knot on the hook length then loop them together properly. A lot of people get it wrong!
i only use 2-3 rigs in the winter i use either an up and over rig if i am casting at distance if fishing snaggy rough ground i use a big rolling swivel 3ft 80lb rig body then a 2ft hook trace in 50lb easy and simple. i like to keep rigs simple.
match the hook to your bait if fishing up north in the winter on the rough ground i use anything upto 8/0 if fishing local 5/0 - 4/0
in the summer if fishing for plaice etc i like to use a flapper or a wishbone rig with smaller hooks such as varivas sal****er champions in 1/0 - 2/0
as mentioned all my rig bits are bought from veals cant speak highly enough of them.
everyone has there own rigs etc for me i hate the pulley rig and this is why i use an up and over as has the same benefits of the pully but fewer bites missed.
Have to love a sea fishing site that bans the word sal****er as it doesn't pass the nanny swear filter. Which makes it just as well that S****horpe is not a famous shore fishing mark
As for rigs I used to crimp but now almost exclusively use silicone stoppers - one above and four below a trapped swivel. Hold the snood in place unless you get a monster but easily adjustable for if you have to replace a hook.
Most of my fishing is with two rigs: a clip down paternoster pennel and a two hook paternoster / cascade rig. Will at times use a wishbone, Portsmouth loop rig or a bomber rig but my experience has shown more fish come to the paternoster than these other rigs if fished together.
