River Aln

The River Aln is the first Marine Conservation Zone in Northumberland and it was negotiated that angling and bait collection would not impact on its current status as "set to maintain", this was agreed and will remain the case unless anglers turn up and leave litter, dead fish and disposable barbecues and drink cans as in previous years. Amble SAC has done several litter picks and have had to convince the local parish Council on several occasions last year that we (anglers) care about the environment. This is important as the next MCZ will be Coquet to St Marys and is under consideration and we need to lead by example to negate any possible management measures in the future. You only have to go to Cullernose, Bamburgh in the summer and see the angling related rubbish, it does us no favours, especially when the various conservation groups put the photographs up as evidence as to our behaviour as in the past.

I do hope everyone takes this seriously.

There are people in Alnmouth who would like nothing better than to get angling stopped in "their" village. They will use any excuse to contact the authorities to complain about what they see as intruders spoiling their patch.

It's up to those of us who use the river to police it. And it's especially up to the clubs who fish it.

If you're not doing it already, the only sensible way to fish the Aln now is catch, measure and release. Let's eliminate the dead fish from the equation and give the locals one less thing to complain about.

Same goes for litter...for Gods sake take it home. There is NO EXCUSE for leaving rubbish on the river bank.

Spread the word people.

Just a bump up for this thread.
Summer league matches have started for a number of clubs, so I would urge them to give the place a bit of a tidy up if there's litter lying around, and get the fish back in the water as quickly as possible.
Let's keep the "locals" happy.

This is the sight that greeted me the last time I was up there, just as you come through the gate. Absolutely disgusting behaviour and no need for it at all. No wonder the place has been declining for the last few years

Sorry like but if its a legal size limit why should you put it back in the water just to keep locals happy?...I spend a lot of money on my fishing gear and bait and if I catch a good sized fish that I like to eat then I will keep it..Im not just gonna put it back to keep "locals" happy, On the other hand yes I agree with taking litter home or binning it but there will always be mindless people who leave rubbish

I think he's saying its disgusting someone has left all those fish there why just leave them there take them or put them back

Nope clearly says catch, measure and release and eliminate dead fish to keep locals happy

For club matches....unless you're going to take the fish away with you. No problems at all with that, so long as they're size.
Wouldn't care to eat anything from that part of the river myself, but each to their own...

That photo just emphasises the pure ignorance of some "anglers".

total disgrace,

and if they're checking from the coquet to st Mary's it's pretty fair to say blyth pier will be closed soon.........!

9 times out of 10 it's match anglers

i'd have to disagree with that!....i'd say more likely clueless anglers, in the short time i've been match fishing i have seen very little mistreatment of fish and every effort is taken to release the fish unharmed
