Does any small boat owners report to coastguard with rough idea on areas etc of visiting before heading out?
And reporting safe return at end of day?

I only inform them if i am doing the Graveyard or pipe line trips where comm's can be broken. Just a quick call to say area i am heading, persons on board and esstimated time of return...i then have to leave myself a post note to call them when i entre the piers because i almost forgot to radio them back one time and did it from the marina.

Mind 99.8% of the time i dont bother them other than the odd radio check.

I often fish on my own and just usually carry out a channel 16 radio check. Fishing at night is a bit different since well meaning people, seeing your lights from shore, sometimes phone the coastguard to say there is a small boat out there etc. So if fishing into the dark I always tell the coastguard and let them know when I get back.
One question I'd like to raise is what is the usual channel for small boat to boat communications in the north east? I think it is channel 8 but I'm told channel 10 is now favoured?

used to call them every time I went out with details of where I was fishing and how many on board and if any young uns with me. If anything happened they knew roughly where I was. And don't forget to tell them when you come back in.
