Rod advice.

After a 20 year lay off from sea fishing ive got the bug again and am after some advice on a new half decent rod.Ive been fishing the tyne with some success but will be fishing local piers and maybe the odd beach or mixed ground mark Iam using an old red abu700 at the moment but will be after a new reel soon probably a mag 525 as they seem to be highly rated on this forum.With a budget of 140 pound [for the rod] i have chosen four which i think might do. Greys grxs [will this cast 6oz and two baits as it is advertised as5oz] Sonik sk3 13ft 5-7oz. Anyfish anywhere 6 and bait13 ft . Ron Tomson Axellerator[is this a rock rod] The rod needs to be fairly lightweight with good bite detectoin and be able to cast a 6oz lead and at least two baits.Any advice from anyone wno uses one of these rods would be most greatfull and helpfull. welcome to nesa mate. i would avoid the greys as it is a bit soft for casting a 6oz weight. ive heard a few good reports about the sk3 but the others im not too sure about.
 
Junior member only implies number of posts mate...nowt to do with age - welcome to the site :)

The SK3 is prob you're best bet in my experience, the Axcellerator is a great rock rod but as forgiving as a broom shank...the others I can't comment on.

As to the reel - 525s are very good, failing that a slosh 20...these will more than cover your needs for clean to mixed ground work...keep your 7000 for the rough ground
 
welcome on board mate:) must agree with the great wallsendo re the axcellerator.perfect rock rod, i love mine, will pull 2 titanics up nee bother, stiff as a scaffold tube (AND PROBABLY AS HEAVY:D) as for bite registration...lets just say its not as sensitive as others on the market:p if ya any good am sure you could hit the horizon with this baby, but am sure there are better allrounders out there.

pal has a grxs and loves it, casts 6oz no bother.

i have a supercast (diawa) 13' for multiplier and also love that, casts well, proper fishing tip, tis a bit soft for the rough stuff mind. am sure they do a 'power' version and also a 'rough ground' version. may be worth a look and maybe only slightly over budget.

haven't had a bash with any of the sonik sea rods (tested their fly rods, very good:D) but they are excellent 'fishing' rods and also excellent value for money if you read the reviews in the mags and also various forums.

I am a fan of Anyfish rods which I find are very user friendly whilst still doing the job. I havent tried a 6 and bait but would recommend the match, big beach and rock rod.
 
It might be worth checking out places like I D Fishing, or Billy's in N. Shields, (amongst others) who often have a good selection of second-hand rods, making your budget go a bit further. I'm sure they'll also give you good advice as to what might suit you best. For £140 or so you might find something pretty tasty. :)

Best advice ever and 100% true, i'd defy anyone to disagree.

I have a Mag though aswell and it's a great reel, but to be honest the difference in performance and casting between a mag and a slosh20 is in my experience tiny, it's the price difference that's huge.
The mag is more of a poser reel :cool::D;).

As for rods, one word.... Century
All the other rod manufacturers, you will hear some negative points about their rods now and again.
I've never heard a bad thing from anyone about a century rod, so that has to tell you something.
I;m using the Kompressor Sport at present and its a perfect alrounder, can't fault it in any way.
Or if you're looking for something none mainstream, I know 2 blokes who swear by the Reelsport Response.

Edit: Ahh just remembered about the £140 budget after typing that, I got mine off Ebay, mind you I was watching for months for the right one, but there's a trading post section on this site you might get some joy from)

i would see if you can try a few diff rods mate, if your wanting distance and have a rod you cant compress then your never going to get far, made that mistake with a zippy years ago when i gave up using my old 484 and lashed out on the zip, ended up selling it on at a bad loss three months later, same with fixed reel seats [which my zippy was] they are a compromise

reels, dunno if you have a power handle on your 7000, if not it makes it one hell of a winch and still has the casting capability you will prob need

i use a pair of abu survans, ones an xp the others an rx, both suit my capabilities casting wise, the xp especially is good at heaving heavy bait/wieghts , both have some serious backbone when it comes to dragging through kelp and or dragging in a weed covered trace

Agree completely...it's where I got my first decent rod on a budget

i bought the axcellorator when it was first released as my uncle had recomended it he dumped his two appollo's for it i use it every time im out pier or beech got it paried up with a slosh30 now as my 535gs has finally given up for life lol but i aint had no problems with these rods in saying that they are stiff to start with but get it through its first season and it will soften the tip a little dont move to much either fishing in the wind :)
 
The only problem i found with the Axcellorator was it was very stiff, and even when casting a 6 or 7oz lead i cound feel it compressing. This might well be down to me and not the rod but i couldnt fish with it.
 
I have got the 14ft sk3 and starting to love it was strange at first to get used to, cos never used a 14ft rod before, but casts well and good bite detection, my dad has a 13ft anyfish anywhere six and bait , he likes it and says it suits him ,i heard the lad who caught a 15lb cod off used hendon used one and had no bother pulling it in ,for around £100+ they both canny;)
 
if you decide on the rt axellerator glasgow angling centre has them on sale at £49.99 for the 13' and £59.99 for the 14' + carriage ;)

Hello mate-i bought an Abu Suveron beachcaster after reading a good report in Sea Angler-canny rod but like a scaffy pole for bite detection.
Also treated myself and got a supermar extra 525. £150. This is a lovely reel. I have to keep an ear on the bearings as if any sand gets in it grates. It is simple to take apart and clean up.
I have an old seven 7000 which is like a brick-bought second hand off e-bay and loaded with 30lb for rock marks-still workd canny.
I would like a new rod with better bite detection so am looking around as well.

Cheers for all the replies and advice.Iwill have a look in I.D.over the weekend and have a wiggle of a few rods.
 
i have an axcellerator and a grxs both are good rods both for different reasons, the axcellerator is a great rock rod but has bad bite detection due to its stiff nature that said it will drag any fish in and i often use an 8oz weight which it has no problems with. the grxs is a more forgiving rod with good bite detection i have had mine a year now and have no fears about using bullying tactics with fish a much underated rod and well worth a look, i would buy either one of these rods again, hope this helps:D
 
Its defanetaly a good shout to have a look for a used century rod, ive got 2 and i swear by them, got a tip tornado for all round fishing and a Kompressor ss for the heavier stuff, both used with 525's.
Personally i would steer clear of the greys grxs, i baught one a few years back and i hated it, like trying to cast a cheese string imho :p
