Rod Advice

I am thinking of buying a new beachcaster but undecided between Century,ZZiplex or Grey's. My current rod is a grey's appolo mk.2 which I use with either my Abu 6500 mag or my slosh 30.
The reason I want a second rod is that I find the appolo rod to be a bit stiff & find it difficult to get much distance.

It's always difficult advising on rods, as what suits one person will not necessarily suit another. If you're keeping your Apollo (good for rough stuff) I'd be inclined to look for something with a little softer action for cleaner/mixed ground. Nearly all Century rods have a powerful but through action (commonly called C-curve as that's what they look like when they're bent) as opposed to a J-curve (more tippy). Exceptions are things like the TT Supermatch, but that may be a tad light for what you want (the TT Sport might be an option).

If you like a tippier kind of rod, something like the Greys Platinum GSI is great (the XS model having a more through action) or from the Conoflex stable something like the Nemesis Plus SLR. Zippie-wise, maybe something like a ZTI or HST - there seem to be loads of Zippies to choose from!

Through-action-wise, maybe a Century Kompressor S or SS depending on how much power you want, or a CM Crest.

Best thing is to try and borrow a mate's rod or try-before-you-buy; it's a bit of a minefield and the classifieds are probably full of rods that people have bought and not really got on with. If you're buying from the top end of the market it can leave you with a bit of a hole in your pocket if you make the wrong choice.

Thanks Sid; no, I just went through the whole process a couple of years back when getting back into fishing after a 25 year break. Faced with a bewildering selection of flashy new carbon poles it took a bit of trial & error to find what I really liked. Personally, couldn't get on with a TTR (although a very popular choice) so just sold it on recently; I prefer the tippier type of rods & found it a bit tiring & heavy to use.

the ttr you had are a good rod but as you say heavy work. the kompressor ss and reelsport are light but plenty of power. some of these companys give a lifetime guarantee which you need regularly you have to pay 30 quid a go . but you need confidence in your gear you could get a good fish on and loose it with gear that snaps regularly...

Depends on what u want it for. The Komp S is very user friendly but will still throw a lead over 240yards! Don't think that u have to buy a stiff rod to cast big distances. Its not stiff but has enough grunt to fish mixed ground with ease and even rough with exception. Brilliant rod to learn to cast with IMO.

The rod will not automatically put lots of yards on yr casts though. Why not go down to Redcar when the NESA Casting meets are on and they'll be more than willing to help you. It's all about timing and technique no matter what your size to be able to bend a rod and put a lead out.

one lad mentioned the nemesis plus SLR.
i have owned the 13ft version for 3years now and wouldn't swap it for anything. I have had an mk2 apollo myself also and find the Nemesis SLR more of an actual "fishing rod". the SLR it is by far the lightest 13ft rod i have ever used and the bite detection is second to none! it is a joy to casr also, overhead or pendulum. Its definitely more suited to mixed ground and the beach, ive used it in the real heavy stuff before and its not really up to the job for that to be honest.
Id definitely recommend it - not to mention the conoflex finish is up there with the best of them.
