rod help

hi lads i was wondering if any one had used the zziplex primo hi flex and what your thoughts are on this rod im looking for a rod that will cope with all grounds and cast a 6oz lead and big bait for cod in the winter and cast a 6oz lead and 3 small baits for flatties in the summer must have good bite detection and not to stiff and able to cast a long way will this be the rod for the job if not is there any other rods you would reccomend i had my mind set on the kompressor sport but im having a look about first thanks lads

Hi mate. There's a lad on wsf called the crust crab who swears by them. He fishes the bristol channel with them I believe. He has had congers to 25lb on the standard primo synchro as well as other good fish including his pb cod of 18lb odd. As I say he now swears by the hi flex version and the originals are regarded as one of the best all rounders available, and acording to him the hi flex is even better. They fish all but the roughest of ground and will chuck a a big lump of lead and big bait as well as three smaller clipped down baits as far as you can. This guy knows what he is talking about and doesn't blow his own trumpet.

To be honest mate, unless you are skull dragging big eels in then the syncro will cope with pretty rough ground. Mine was used all over the Bc for donkeys years and landed eels to 25lb over broken ground with fast tides. It's all well and good having a stiffer rod, but remember that you lose feel during the fight, and you can rip hooks clean from fishes mouths with stiffer rods, and casting becomes harder. If you mean really really rough ground/kelp then yeah, an ultra stiff rod will help. These are just my opinions. I must admit to owning the m4 evo for when there's tons of weed about just for that extra power on the retrieve, but i'd much rather fish with a primo, even when targeting the big stuff.

Best advice a can give you mate try before you buy, especially with zziplex it could turn out to be an expensive mistake, they are marmite rods you either love em or hate em (I've been there). Primo hi flex nice for clean beach fishing but if your fishing in strong tide, mixed ground with the odd snag a bit weed the m4 evo is better.

The guy I mentioned fishes the bristol channel which has strong tide and mixed, roughish ground and rates them highly. You can't get better advise than that. People up here are blinkered ( I'm from the north east ) and people seem to think if a rod bends then its no good. Totally wrong imo.

It's impossible to recommend a rough ground rod for an individual imo.
I've got a 14ft Apollo Mk 1, which is my weapon of choice it bends nice then locks solid, I'm 5' 10" 13 stone and can lean right into it with confidence when snagged. Give my rod to a 9 stone angler and he will struggle with it.
Something lighter like a tippy sport will suit him better perhaps.
I also use braid for some of my rough ground fishing which poses another problem, because of the lack of stretch you need a rod that will bend to absorb the lunges of a good fish. Put simply, if you use braid on a stiff rod and get an angry cod on and don't have the clutch on your reel set the hook will pull out, straighten or snap.

Very good info it is too mate.
My brother lives in taunton and fishes the bristol channel.
He uses a zippy bullet, the scary original one, stiff but with a nice tip which dosnt pull your lead out in the tide. I've had a try and its too savage for me, but he's 5 stone heavier and like a brick s/house and swings it around like a toothpick.

As mentioned all the hi-flex's have there limitations fishing wise, but from a casting point of view they will put a smile on your face as they are designed to do as they say "flex" more than the standard models. The primo and kompressor are very different rods so getting a try of one is always good.

I don't think you'll get a rod to do it all.

The set up I'm using is.
66lb power pro with a 60lb mono shockleader. My rough ground terminal gear is really simple, a 3 way swivel tied to the shockleader, then 50lb "rotten bottom" to hookl and sinker attatched to the swivel via a simple double overhand loop.
When I get snagged I pull out a peice of broomshank with leather glued around it, wrap the braid around it 3 times and a short pull usually results in getting everything back!
Braid imo is great for fishing into rough ground from a height. I wouldn't use it on a shallow rock mark where it would be in contact with sharp rocks. I use mono when the sea is rough also.
I bought a couple of slosh 20s from a couple of cracking lads on here! And they are superb for using braid as they have a pretty tall narrow spool, compared to say an Abu 6500.

Bumping fish off can be a problem if you use a stiff rod! Oh and manta xtras all the way!

I used it on my tourny match and pulled whitings off. Thats why its best used on a fixed spool floppy rod.

Can't use it when theres a sea running or any tide run like the Tyne either.

Just pulls leads out.

Just my opinion like.

Alot of the Scarborough lads use braid on there 525s to get distance over rough ground. TBH u can get far enough using 30lb line on a saltist 30 so I don't see the advantage TBH.
