canny day on the pier today apart from extreme wind...was there early morning with mydad he caught a combo of mackerel and coalie/pollack on a set of daylights...then i struck into 3 coalie or pollack .and embarassingly had to shout grab the leader as my drag was not set right ....all in all good day shoulda took photos of sandeels/launce from the photo can anyone tell me if they are coalie or pollack as the lower lip is protruding further than the upper lip colour is olive ish and greeinsh. cheers

daylights and fladen mini octopus mate....would recommend full beachcaster as i could not use my spinning rod in the wind ......u might be able to but more fish were caught in what i would say the 3/4 mark to the end of the pier ...was a lad there that kept getting full houses compared to the end where folks were getting the odd two every half hour or so ..

Cheers al bear that in mind wind supposed to be ok tommoro but you never know , I always take three rods anyway you just never know what could happen, I normaly fish about 100yds off the end, don't like to go too far ha ha ;)

Hard to tell from the pictures but they look like Coalies to me. Pollack have a shovel like tail while Coalies are a more pronounced v-shape

thats interesting MT thanks a lot i will be observing for the signs the next time i catch them before i shove em in my gob....with a wee bit a batter salt and vinegar i think they will taste pretty similar tho .....quite full from my tea ....2 pollack 2 mackerel for today all omaga 3ed up ...lol

best way to tell a coalie from a pollack is the lateral lines, coalies have a straight lateral line and a pollack has an upwards curve from about the dorsal fin.

just happy to catch and eat but for discussion sake does colour matter when differentiating coalies from pollack ....i remember having coalies last yr and they were a dark blue/black with a silvery flank ..and these one were well greenish olive like with golden yellow ....but i was still unsure hence the pollack/coalie reference in mycatch report...only importance is towards th lure fishing challenge...:red: i will have a look in my dads freezer tomorrow and try take a better photo and whack it on ... emmm ... mr charlton i do have a gift for you from far far away .....
