I fished Roker pier last night with my mate Colin Todd from 5.30 onwards. It was very quiet till after 12 midnight. The only fish caught were dabs, whiting and flounders. I was blanking right up till my mate left around 12.30.
I managed a Tommie as he was leaving. I then had another one next cast and then got a good bite and pulled in a codling on the 3lb mark. I then got another one just over 2 lb. Two casts later I got a good pull down and picked up my rod and hooked into what felt like a good fish. The fish gave a great fight and I had to take great care as my pennel rig only had 1/0 hooks. When it came to the surface I decided that lifting it would be to risky so I walked it along to the steps. My mate BJ (Brian Jackson) was fishing along the lower deck and he came along and helped me to land it. It weighed in at 9lb and 10 ozs. After photographing it I returned it and thankfully it swim away. I had a great nights fishing and was very surprised to land a fish this heavy at this time of the year.
