Thanks for all the replies lads and sorry about the miserable mush in the picture. I was thrilled to catch that fish and can still imagine and feel myself winding it in. It surprises some anglers that I returned it! but I don't eat much fish myself, my parents do and I already had two fish out for their dinner plate. My main reason was that I assumed it was full of roe. The pictures don't give a true indication of the size of its underbelly and it looked and felt like it was full of eggs and for me releasing it back was the right decision. I have to point out that I was lucky enough to catch a cod a little heavier than this one last year and I kept it for eating.
