I spoke to Sunderland Council today about the rumour of the Roker Pier closure, I was assured that there are NO plans to close it to anglers or anyone else on a permanent basis. The pier will be closed from about mid April until November. This is to carry out remedial work. There are also NO plans to install CCTV. cameras,.
Tight Lines, Sam.

you are a well respected person both in sea and fresh water community and you give a lot of good advice both on radio and the news paper reports.
thanks again sam on behalf of all anglers that go to roker pier.

Yes, lets just leave the pier to drop to bits, who cares as long as the tinsel tossers can still get on for the summer. Who cares if it means in a few years Roker goes the same way as the Heugh in Hartlepool or the old North pier, beaten and battered and closed to everyone as an unsafe structure. It's not as if this isn't happening already, what with the pier needing to be closed for emergency repairs after pretty much every major winter storm.

Or alternatively we can applaud Sunderland Council for spending the money to restore the pier with a view to keeping it open for everyone to enjoy for years to come.
