Had a daft session with the little un this after on roker . Float fished a rag near the bottom end for an hour- crystal clear water showed sprats just under the surface, sand eels under them and flashes of bigger stuff underneath big shoals of both by the way. Lad suggested moving a tad further up to whale rock- first chuck( last ragworm!) got a small coalie ( released obviously) . Went to the Leas at S. shields with just spinners left, 2 small collies BUT hit something better further out which I am sure was a mackerel by the way it took it. Lost it half way in then immediately got a snag which signalled the end of our day. I'd filed down the barbs on my spinners as I used them at fontburn last week which was maybe why I lost it. Anyhow, looks like the mackerel are close- please use floats, fly or spinners and take only a couple.

i been thinking about bending my barbs down as dont like the small flats getting gut hooked and seems you cant do any thing about it .

I saw sand eels being eaten by a cormorant at the end of the pier about two weeks ago, he was getting some good sized ones as well, and they were flying out of the water when he was coming up after them, it made me wish that I had brought small hooks to catch some as they are a golden bait.

hi guys bit of topic but has any of you fished behind the riffle range at whitburn were you can go down to the beach bits in the small sandy areas.
just thinking of giving it a go some time but don't fancy getting there and realising I am going to loss lots of gear
