Rotten bottom alternatives?

I currently use something similar to a tronix rotten bottom ( looks like a lower case g ) but with my leads im finding the eye on the lead is fairly small causing very few releases from the clip resulting in losing everything when rough grounding.

Does anyone use or recommend an alternative?

I use 60lb shockleader on my hook trace and 20lb on my lead snood then use a Gemini clip to clip the rig it makes a good rotten bottom and when clipped its safe when casting and it gives me a better chance of landing my fish withy the stronger line

I 'm sure the canny links look like a small g. You can buy a breakaway lead release that lets you attach lead to breakaway clip, when lead hits water it partly releases then in a snag if you pull the spring expands and lets lead go. I used them this morn and I tied some 15lb line between lead and breakaway clip it kind of gives you 2 chances of getting your lead back, when your lead does snap off your clip comes back because its attached to your strong rig body. another way is to use two bait clips (letter U type ones) clipped together same again attach lower strength line to lead and rig body, when lead hits water the two bait clips release and let lead go onto auxillary light line. rotten bottom alternatives panel pins does the job cheap and effective and versatile will try and get a pic up sometime to show.

I'm noticing that a lot of the times I straight rod pull lead out of snag the breakaway link obviously releases and drops onto 5'' rotten bottom light line, the pull and little drop seems to dislodge lead from snag and it comes home on light rotten bottom line. I've been using this with 25lb main line (0.433 diameter) and a 15lb rotten bottom line, worth a go, breakaway clips where from nets at grange town sunderland never seen them anywhere else but on line.

Bait clip cut down slightly hook into an oval link join by 15lb with a couple over hand knots to weaken the line.

im sure hes talking about the rotters
the canny links are a different shape with the built in bait clip

I don't use rotten bottoms very often these days lose less gear without them

you can put a cheap oval split link on the lead or buy/make leads with bigger eye for rotters to release better

Tried the ovalnrings but made very little difference, ive about 30 weights left to use lol

it may be the hook on the rotters too big then ? seen some dodgy ones on ebay...
i use veals rotters without any bother

I'll try cliping a little off the clips

use this all the time now.never had one not release.you have to make the pins but don't take long,i make 100 or so up at a time ,get the pins from the pound shop and cut up a litre milk bottle,cheap as chips

I use an upside down Gemini genie clip everytime, never fails and withstands fairly heavy casting. Bollocks all this fiddley sh@t.

this may sound daft,and works,{NOT A WIND UP]couple of years ago fished st, andrews area while on holiday, SO forgot my leads, rather than buy them,{make my own] went fishing skiers area only lobbing it 10 15 yards,useing the dogs SCOOP BAGS, iput couple of stones in bag @ twisted it onto trace lobbed in no problem,ps you could also fill bags with sand. mind you doubt this method would work at much more distance but ideal for lobbing. tight lines.:thumbup::thumbup: take the p if you want,saved my holiday and i also had some nice red cod up to 5lb.

seen people use bags wth sand in them for wieghts ,i used to use chain links also seen people use handlines off the beach before and caught cod.

I build my own rotten bottoms and they've never failed me yet. Release every chuck and doesn't cost a penny to make.

Upside down bait clip works every time 10lb line in really heavy gear 40lb hook lengths 80lb rig body pulls the plug out lol but the upside down bait clips stay clipped even when power casting and I don't think I have had one not release
