When I'm fishing rough or mixed ground I often get snags, these usualy result in me pulling line in with towel for main line to snap (20lb) which I obviously lose rig, weight and shock leader not to mention half main line sometimes. Can I use a crap not for sinker or small lb line? but if I did surely this defeats object of having a heavy shock leader during cast? can you buy a kind of clip or something? losing a weight is a pain but line and rig aswel is expensive

Yep, some form of rotten bottom set up is what you need. Lot's of different ways of doing it, I'm sure everyone has their preferred method. Personally I use an inverted Gemini bent rig-clip and a length of 15lb amnesia line; hang the sinker on the clip for casting. If using a clip-down rig I'll use an Imp with a Smiley's rotter hanging off it - again with a length of weak line tied to the sinker.

Gary :)

main line ok strong as to snap it I normally wrap it around my shouldrs and run up beach to snap it so main line doing its job me thinks, is there not a clip which fits to weight that gives when pulled as above but ok on cast?

20lb line is ok for mixed ground but imo not strong enough for rough ground try 30lb line and you will be able to pull out of the snags much easier

cheers skott, I get get that rig, basicaly I'm clipping on my weight, on impact it should dislodge from bait clip and be then supported by a inferior lb line to my set up, if weight gets snagged enough its lost but rig and fishhaha comes home, I can tye that no probs cheers lads:)

Cut the Gemini bait clip part down a little so it releases but not 2 much so it doesnt come off the clip during the cast. Use an oval link to protect the knot on the sinker end. 15lb line if using 20lb main. Put a Granny knot in to ensure it snaps.
