There's a rumour around at the moment that commercial cod fishing will cease from next Thursday until the new year. Has anyone else heard anything? Apparently this will be announced shortly??
Yes but often the shore angler is either not part of or a small part of the big picture.I understand your frustrations as a shore angler - but conserving cod stocks in the North Sea is not just to benefit shore anglers....there is a much bigger picture than that...
By-catch and discard is an absolute disgrace - and really should be made illegal IMHO...
Imagine, if you will, a farmer "trawled" a net right across miles of countryside, capturing everything in its path....and at the end of his "Trawl" he decided to dump everything apart from rabbits - so deer, badgers, foxes, in fact all other animals (apart from rabbits) were simply chucked back...dead...
It may sound extreme - but same principal I reckon....would the population of the UK, and politicians allow this to happen?
Somehow I think not....food for thought...

The commercial aspects are the ones that seem to be highlighted in most studies.
Said studies also seem to ignore the local impact of a community where income, employment and knock on effects result from anglers.
That aspect is as important as the boys out catching fish to make money.
