SACN Press Release - No Licence

Something to smile about at last.

Jonathan R Shaw (Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Marine, Landscape and Rural Affairs) and Minister for the South East), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)
I met sea angling representatives at the Angling summit on 18 February where a number of concerns were raised with me regarding the introduction of a chargeable licence for sea angling. I have also discussed the issue direct with anglers around the coast, as have my officials. In view of the concerns expressed, including the extent to which sea anglers expected to see benefits from the charge, I have decided not to proceed with enabling powers in the Marine Bill to introduce a sea angling licence.
I will, none the less, continue with a package of other measures that aim to provide benefits for anglers, including a review of nursery areas for the protection of bass stocks and of inshore netting, and a pilot study on area-based restrictions to support sea angling. I have also recently announced measures to increase protection of tope, a key species for anglers.
I will reconsider the arguments for introducing a recreational sea angling licence at some stage in the future in the light of progress on the aforementioned measures.

What's the next fight we can take to the Government?

I wonder if has got anything to do with a General election that is due within the next two years.

Only a battle won (a big one) not the war yet, Dave and I attended a meeting in London last week with Natural England hosted by DEFRA along with the CEFAS scientist on marine protected Area's ,no take zones and a new one on us highly protected areas. To quote one of the CEFAS guys "be under no illusion they will happen" . When asked by Richard Ferre` what are they, how many and where are they to be, Natural England stated they did not know, muttered something about confidentiality and the words conflict resolution came up a lot. So we just have to wait until April. There is no doubt that DEFRA went back after the meeting in Newbiggin and told the man from the ministry that the word licence did not go down to well.
All those that attended the meeting and returned a response on the strategy or e-mailed Nicola Clarke at DEFRA HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE.
Mr Shaw is doing some of his own conflict resolution.

Great news. It's a step forward. Still can't understand the politicians though. Martin Salter, the Labour spokesman for angling (who still wants a licence imposed), wants now to increase the MLS to counter the over-exploitation of fish stocks. Can't these simpletons get through their thick heads, that commercial fishermen are still fishing the same grounds, with the same gear, catching the same size of fish. They will still kill the same undersize fish. Increasing the MLS means that they have to throw back, dead, even more discards. And because they can keep fewer, they will fish even harder to make up the difference, thus meaning even more discards. It's obvious that they have to get the commercials to change their gear to only catch bigger fish. They have to impose a MCS (minimum catch size). Politicians are clowns, but I'm sure everyone knows that already.

Good news! I always used to fork out for a coarse fishing license as a teenager and never saw bugger all being done with the money anyway.:D

Goes back to the question I asked at Newbiggin, How can they promise us bigger and more fish when we are part of the EU and therefore the CFP. Obviously they all thought we were all stupid and would just pay it without complaining, as they have no intention of stoppping the commercials from plundering the seas and therefore cannot promise us fish!

All I can say on the CFP is that I see at work how inefective it actually is. The smaller the nets the fisherman fish with, the more days at sea they are allowed to fish! It just doesn't meke sense! The whitefish boats fishing 120mm gear are allowed less days at sea than the 80mm twin rig prawn fleet which is crazy! The discards on a typical prawn trawler that I see first hand are for say a four hour tow are around 300kg with around 80-100kg of prawns kept. This 300kg of discards is mainly made up of juvenile haddock and mixed flats with a sprinkling of other species. The trawlers only have to get 30 or 35% of prawns to meet the quota to enable them to fish with such small nets. The massacre that goes on by the prawn fleet is truly horrific and has to be stopped if there are going to be any fish left in the north sea as the stocks simply cannot sustain the depletion of all of the juvenile fish. Trawling for prawns should be banned and creeling only brought in and the change in the north sea would be unbeliveable. Even on the whitefish boats I see them dumping cod under 5Lb as they are not top grade and they do not get top prices for them. What hope have us anglers got? And the cheek of it is they were going to make us pay to fish!

Agree with everything you've said there Graham. Have noticed that the under 10mtr boats down south are up in arms as they've been told they're only allowed to land 50kg of cod per month.
It's my belief that the licence idea is and was an idea to try and bring in more revenue for HM government. Simple as that as it's obvious that they have no intention of protecting the marine environment by remaining part of the EU and abiding by the CFP. I think until we have one body that encompasses all parts of Recreational Sea Angling i.e. publishers, tackle manufacturers, tackle shops, charter boats and even the humble angler, then I don't think we can get much further. It's always the silent majority that suffer, while the vocal minority continue to be heard.

Just as an afterthought to what I said about a body to represent our interests and who should be part of that, it was interesting to note that at the meeting at Newbiggin it was made completly made up of anglers with a couple of tackle shop owners....Strangely no MD from Grey's/Hardy's or the other North East manufacturers Century and Titan. Are we as anglers a lone voice?

Read it all Leon.....

I think the jury is gonna be out on this for a long time until the infrastructure is set up and we see how powerful a lobby group it can be when they face up to the government on issues and get a positive response.
I sincerely hope that Angling Unity will represent us all, but again, I'd ask is it all grass roots anglers or are manufacturers etc going to be part of it all?

is it all grass roots anglers or are manufacturers etc going to be part of it all?

It's intended that the new organisation will have individual members, a result for those of us that belong to (say) the NFSA and SAA and the ACA. In future there will only be one organisation to join and one membership to pay.

Hopefuly the Angling Trades Association will also join at some point.
