"SAPPHIRE" Chartered Fishing Boat, Sunderland.

Catfish.

Catfish.

The Catfish (Anarhichas Lupus) is a member of the Blenny family. It is sold in fish shops as Rock Salmon or Rockfish. There are three species of "Cat's" the Spotted, the Black and the one which was caught on the Sapphire just known as Catfish. The British record boat caught is 26lbs.6ozs. taken in 1989 off Whitby. Shore caught record is 12lbs.12ozs. taken at Stonehaven in 1978.
They feed on whelks, clams, hermit crabs, sea urchins and other bottom living creatures.
I remember a lot of years ago a very well known North East angler (I'm not going to mention his name as he still fishes). catching a catfish about 10lbs.
Knowing how dangerous they are he decided to "dispatch" it using a large hammer he had on board. He was in the small boat (15 foot) on his own.
The fish was trying to take lumps out of ???. and the wooden ribs of the boat.
Meanwhile ??? was lashing out with the hammer trying not to get bitten.
Yes, you've guessed it,he put the hammer through the bottom of the boat.
He managed to get back into Cullercoats by stuffing some rags into the hole he had made in the boat. What happened to the fish, I don't know.

belter story sam m8, as soon as you mentiond the hammer a knew wat was coming, a knew a lad who`s son dropped a 20 kilo weight used for an anchor, it put a hole in the boat, but they were still in newbiggin bay .!

These fish are easy to handle,if you know how,Knock it on the head ,and leave for a while then knock it again .lovely eating fish had one last year ,lightly fried in seasoned flour and Olive oil .it has a pink flesh as they feed on lobsters .Prawns etc.Beautiful flavor.

PS There seems to be an outbreak of pettiness on here lately are we not grown ups.lets start acting like grown ups FFS
