Apparently you can catch them up st abbs off rock marks, wudnt mind catching one to add to my species list, out on sapphire tomorow so fingers crossed (and out the way) I catch one lol

No just trying to explain about wolf fish
any way just cut the line and if there to be kept, dispatch (somehow) and put out the way because you may think there dead and the next thing you know it will be up your arm, be careful with them, seen a very experienced skipper who thought one was dead and guess what latched on to his hand and ripped it to pieces

Seen them caught before,,,,if ya gonna keep it ,severe the head, that way ye get rid of the danger bit :D:D:D:D:D:D

"SAPPHIRE" Chartered Fishing Boat, Sunderland,

Wolf fish, the last time i seen one must have been bout 30 years ago only a small one then the skipper at the time did not call it a wolf fish or catfish he he another name for it which i can"t recall now but remember he said it was off the eel family live in the wrecks, so to me when it came up i said to the lads its a catfish they toll me its real name was a wolf fish and are common in norway, Thats why i asked on here, no need for all this slaging off when is it going to stop, peter.

Wolf fish/ catfish are becoming more and more regular on the northeast coast I have had a couple myself and as billy turbot says they live a long time out of water I was in norway early in the year where gary pye managed a cracking 18lb wolfy which was dispatched as it wouldn't go back a lad fileted it for me 3 hours after it was dispached and it was still going for him after 4 or 5 heavy blows it was still alive but kinda playing dead these fish just don't give in

Thank you for that info nom, end of the day i had a slice off it bloody lovelly i would eat the wolfy than cod,

Aye peter, they say it's real good to eat ..... that one in the picture went back .. :) I wasn't brave enough to do anything else with it :)

Facinating info on the wolf fish. I caught some in Norway last year and got a shock at the noise that was created when one bit down on the pliers being used to remove the hook. I did not realise they were dangerous as it went in the bag ready for tea that night - luckily its demise followed without incident !!. I am off to Norway again in August so I will be aware of the potential harm and make sure to 'dispatch' it straight away. As Peter and others rightly say - it is tremendous eating whichever way you cook it

catfish, or just catty ?

catfish, or just catty ?

I have fished for years, and last year saw my 1st 'wolfish' did not know what the hell it was but was ugly, the lad that landed it warned us, keep clear it's not dead.

Not everyone is necessarrily clued up on all species, even skippers can be introduced to 'new' species to them even after years of angling. A good angler/skipper knows when to listen and when to learn, my opinion is that by openly asking questions he shows his strength.

I have fished off the Sapphire, I don't know Peter apart from this, but to me he is a boat owner that is having a go at making a living, if people are happy with that they will book with him if your not then there are plenty other charter boats,

Forums are a good way to communicate and to gain valuable information, but wherever a forum exists there will be a minority that can't help but fued. This is human nature.

I have booked another trip on the Sapphire, and if things go well again will not hesitate to look at future outings.

lads all It tried to so was point out the dangers,we all know now the dangers, and what i said to peter was just in jest ,seems it was taking the wrong way by some,I once boiled a catfish head took the jaw bone out complete with teeth, took it to the pub and my mate who is a dentist really thought it was a animal jaw

Having a dig because he was a boat skipper and could not recall seeing a wolf fish was not you 'trying to point out the dangers' you were being rude again and inflammatory. If you can not say anything nice or constructive - keep your thoughts to yourself. People are getting a bit peed off with it and the postings will decrease because of the attitude of a minority.

lads, it`s an open forum, opinions differ, peter`s had a bad ride lately, he rode it like a true gent, and came out the true man he is. billyturbot, acted on information recieved(rong) but was man enough to appoligise both personnally to peter and on here for every1 to see, steve, a don`t think billy`s `dig` was meant the way you took it, but a commend you for fighting the lads corner,
comon lads, back to fishing.
