Sea Monster

A friend posted this up on Facebook tonight. It brought back memories long forgotten. I remember how excited I was that a Sea Monster had been washed up on the shore of my home town. Almost 35 years later Arthur C. Clark's predictions about sea serpents have unfortunately still not come to fruition. The Gourock segment starts 3mins 20 secs into the clip.

When I worked for NCB we had a ropeman who was an ex-trawler skipper. He used to tell me tales of cod that were 5 foot long which they caught deep sea. He also told me once when they opened the cod end on the net a monster rose out of the fish and scrambled back over the gunwales and back into the sea.

This of course was an enormous conger eel but it makes you think what size do they grow to and is this where the myths about sea monsters begin.

I have an animal encyclopaedia I have had since a child and in there is a picture of a blue whale which has massive circular skin lesions from tangling with a giant squid. Must have been some size squid to tackle a blue whale:o
