If you're thinking of fishing at Seaham any time soon you might want to reconsider.

Raw sewage spill pollutes beach

An investigation is under way after raw sewage ended up spread across Seaham beach in County Durham.

Northumbrian Water said pipes intended to take foul waste to the sewage works and out to sea had been damaged and blocked after torrential downpours.

Company spokesman Alistair Baker said the system was complicated and it could take some time to correct the problem.

He apologised to local people and said everything was being done to repair the damaged system.

Mr Baker said: "In this instance the indication is that there has been damage to an improvement scheme put in at great cost a few years ago to intercept water and clean up Seaham beach and harbour.

"We do realise this is unpleasant and unsatisfactory and we are working with other agencies and are looking to find out what can be done.

"The solution will not be a quick fix, unfortunately."

theres been a guy down on hendon beach for the last 4 days wondering where the usual collection of sanitary towels and baby wipes were after the heavy rains , guess we know now
3 or 4 over flow pipes from hendon to ryhope and a switching station on the cliffs above each , and for the first time since the hendon treatment plant went in theres no cr4p floating in the water after heavy rain fall , makes you wonder where the stuff at seaham comes from dont it :D
oh and why theres reports of bumper catches from seaham prom and nothing at hendon prom

fish eat poo and the critters that eat poo ,its sad but its what they come in to hendon for, so if its getting dumped down the beach at seaham thats where the fish will go

the convent and ryhope beach marks should be worth a try tonight then as we have rain again :D

look out for new fish id help in the next few days LOL
