Fished 2 hrs either side of low water last night.....Apart from a solitary crab, nowt else to report. No bites. Good sea running too.
When I came I said to wor lass I was away to the bath to end it all! Sick!

Seriously thinking that if things don't improve up this way by the end of December then I'm jacking in sea fishing and am just going to fly fish.
Cannot justify the expense of sea fishing for no return any longer.

shame you caught nowt m8 and a bigger shame that you are thinking of packing it in. i sometimes think like that to after 6 or 8 or even more hours freezing myself and catching nothing but for some stange reason i keep going back out. hope you have a change of heart and hope you catch something soon.

cheers

Cheers Mark.....

It's the consistency of catching nowt....Even some of the match anglers in our club are making a regular occurence of coming back empty handed and if that's the state of affairs then what hope for us mere mortals?

i think it just depends where you fish fishing from beaches there is even a bigger chance of you catchin nowt than from say piers i have fished south shields pier hundreds of times and have never blanked had some bad sesions but never blanked, ive fished the beaches sometimes cought loads and sometimes blanked several times in a row,

keep your head up and it will be ok or find somewhere else to fish

No Fish

No Fish

My motto throughout my 20 odd years of fishing is if I went fishing to purely catch fish I would have given up in the first week. Just keep plugging on. Same goes for my footbal as well, KEANO KEANO !!

Only fished the beach a couple of times this year. Usually on the rock marks up here. Like I said there'd been a good sea runnin, so from previous experience thought the beach would fish especially at the time I went. God not even any flatties man.
Previous years I woul;d at least have had bites that would have kept my faith up. My personal belief now is that there are very few fish left inshore.
Likke I said if anglers I know who have fished matches for years are saying it's knackered then what's the point. Could fish a still water with the fly rod and at least know that if I don't catch it's because I have'nt used the right fly or technique.

I know what youre saying Red, ive fished the same areas you fish for the last 22 years or so, infact probably most of the same marks going off your location. Its cliche but the fishings not what it was, and never will be, same goes for the bait in the area. On the other hand, in 5 years time itl be worse again so we can only make the most of what we got now i reckon.

I agree that i enjoy fishing for being outdoors and all that, but i wouldnt bother fishing if i knew i wasnt going to catch, id take up walking or summat, lol.

On another note, were you down checking the sea at seaton on sunday morning ? (with Mr M) I take it youre in the same club as ken middlemist ?

I fully understand where you are coming from as far as quantity of fish is concerned but I have turned from fresh water fishing to sea fishing, the reason being, if I catch a cod (or whatever sea fish) I get satisfaction out of this because it is a completely wild fish, no-one has placed it there for me to catch (some people might say god has, but I don't believe in that, anyway that's getting away from the point) I found that fresh water fishing was starting to get rediculous, I know fisheries where they row around in a boat and put fish in the water in front of you with a big bucket (seriously) now that is not fishing, you might as well give the guy your money and pick a couple of trout out of the tank!!! So when you say that if you don't catch anything it's because you have'nt used the right fly or technique that's probably not the case, it's probably because the water was stocked 5 days ago and the fish have all been caught.

My advice is stick with the sea and one day you will hit on and have a cracking session, one thing for certain, you will appreciate it more.

Good luck

P.S.
The only exception to what I have been spouting on about is if you are fishing for wild Brown trout and not stocked Rainbow trout, but again don't bother cos Cod are tasty, Brown Trout taste like, well, lumps of brown stuff!

Well Rory mate, plenty of advice for you there.

I went through the exact same thing about two years ago mate, it was the worst year I had ever had fishing from the shore.

Then came last year, well what can we say about that. It made the previous year look pretty good to be honest. I took a few people to marks that they had never fished before. They caght fish and I blanked.

Ask a few people from NESA they will tell you, probably the best would be Neil (Kingfisher), I took him to a mark that he had not fished before and he caught a 7 1/2 lb er on his first chuck and I blanked. It was funny at the time but as the season went on it started to weigh down on what was happening.

This season I am fishing as I usually do. Where my head takes me, if I get a goodun well that is meant to be. If I don't then there is always next year.

Don't give up yet Rory. Get out there and travel around a bit, the biggun will come mate.

Jim.

Hi red try a bit further up the coast at Horden it's normally ok there.I,ve never blanked even if it's been small whitey.Or a bit ffurther down on the middleton at h/pool.y

There are bad years, there are good years! This is certainly a bad year but what do you expect given small tides and westerly winds?Even when we have had half a sea on this year it has been a south/south east which is always a crap sea unless it comes away huge which it never has.The amount of undersize fish about could be a good sign, and given a decent North/north easterly i think we might just be suprised.Certainly going on the bags up at Arbroath this week in the right conditions signs look very good.

Bri K we have young Kenny Middlemas in the Alnwick club. Old Ken still fishes with the Amble club.
Lots of avdice in their but really nowt that I haven't already tried. Can't just say it's been the seas as there have been a couple of good seas that just haven't produced. Remember a few years back, shoals of fish going backwards and forwards along the beach and pretty much everyone catching and if you didn't it was because you weren't using the right bait or casting to the right spot. That was even when there hadn't been much of a sea.
Hardly even any flatties even.
It's not just about catching fish, I enjoy the camiradre of fishing in a club and discussing tales of joy and woe when we return. I enjoy the long walks and the outdoors, even getting up at 3am to go digging bait. But when I see how bad things are getting I become depressed and pessimistic for the future.
About 3 years ago we had an average of 10 people weighing in most sessions, over all tidal conditions. This year that is down to an average of 5 per session and the fish are on average much smaller! This year they've nearly all been about 1 -1 1/2lb, whereas they were about 2-3lb a few years back.
Lol Beachlover.....Got to admit that trout does tate like....well trout. sort of fleshy earth!

lol @ old ken

i was 'old kens' young apprentice when he had the tackle shop, he taught me to dress flies, build rods and service reels. |Real nice bloke and i couldnt put a value on what i learned off him, he also dresses the best flies ive seen.

Didnt know young kenny was fishing again but then ive lost touch with all the old faces from the amble club. used to fish in the amble juniors when he did.

Is it not the '3 year cod cycle' thats spoiling your fishing ? one year less cod but bigger, next year hardly any and the year after that plenty of smaller codling ?

I think the weathers the biggest factor, back in the good old days the winter league started at the beginning of september and you had good hard frosts by then, ive been working outside all day today in a t-shirt :S

Bri.

Not sure if the weather is a factor Bri.

Cod cycles am not sure of but last year the quality of fish was much better with many 5-6lbers caught. Year before they all averaged about 2-3lb. Couple of doublers as well over both years but. This year very few fish and all around the 1-1 1/2lb mark. Like last year they all seem to be in small pockets and it's being in the right place at the right time. Previous years you could say I'm going to such and such a place and nigh on be guaranted a fish or two.

Speaking to Auld Kens missus in Morrisons the other week and she was saying he thinks things are poor.

Young Ken had been promising to come to the Alnwick club for years and has made a fairly good start to the season. Think he's about 5th at the mo. He Started club fishing again this year to get out and about. His cousin Craig still fishes the Amble club and had a nice turbot the other week.

Youre right about the air temperature. Never had to put me hands on me nuts yet to warm them up!
