Second lure Bass

One of the things I was told for reel for braid was to get the smoothest possible to get a good line lay. I tend to use Okuma reels for summer spinning/flatties but for the braid I splashed out a bit more. Got a small Abu Cardinal for about £32, nice and smooth.

Had a couple more on lures tonight, the first I've caught using a suface popper. Both small at probably about a pound and a half but these were the best fight Bass I've had so far.

well done mate:) again:rolleyes::D you'll have to take is out some time:p out early in morn to try get 1 meself, not havin any luck:( so fingers crossed for the morra
 
well done m8.its great when you see them take the lure on the top.it would be great if one of us could get a biggy.wont be me with me hand though.2 weeks and im fishin plaster or not--lol

Just 16 inches. Went away like a rocket and nearly sliced my hand off too when putting it back in!

EDIT: Hand now swollen to twice its size. Can you get infected from them? First time its ever happened!

Nice one. Bass are stunning fish, not only to look at and not only for the fight, but they taste blinking good too. Had more than my fair share of the old hot pipe from Blyth power station (don't mind naming the spot since it's gone). 2-3lb'ers probably the best on light gear, my best was about 7.5lb and didn't seem to have the power but had the weight. Had a couple around 5lb the same. Miss those days fishing on there but don't miss the danger/risks involved fishing there.
Had a few surface takes on floated red-gill's that I wish I could have caught on camera - crest of a wave takes and the fish clear out of the water on the take - amazing to see!

Your hand has probabaly become infected from the mucous that line the bass's fins. Although they are not poisonous, anyone who has ever been 'spiked' by a bass's spines will know just how much like needles they are. I myself have had some quite badly infected cuts mainly from the edges of their gill covers where they can be razor sharp, and worse still they seem to have little thorny points on them which can easily snap off and get under your skin like spelks. Trouble is these are also lined with the mucous. Most of the bass I catch are returned, so I know what it's like trying to carefully unhook them. However they are certainly worth the odd cut and jab.
Hope your hand doesn't spoil your fishing !

Cheers for the info as I have been worried. It was as it was being released, the fins under the belly caught me. Never happened before, guess I was unlucky.

Lovely reports lads, I would love two try me hand at popping! oh an 5150 the hot pipe eh!!! i had a few meself must 20yrs back, cracking times:( but ya neverknow a new power station maybe:o
 
The patchinko is silver/black. What was so dangerous with the old power station pipe? It was removed before I started sea fishing.

Love your reports on the bass plugging. Good rewarding stuff. I've had a few on bait but never on the lure (though haven't tried with any real zeal - for sure next summer though).

First of all you had to trespass by climbing over a set of 7-8' tall barrier columns, then the surface was extremely slippy and sloped a the sides, finally the cruncher was the thousand of gallons of water per minute gushing out of the outlets combined with already strong currents in that area. Used to wade out along the causeway out to it in chest deep water (the end of the pipe was raised up so would be out of the water long before the causeway cleared... None if it was for the faint hearted! Had some amazing sessions off there but some hairy moments too, especially on very dark nights.

Are there any similar marks to this anywhere on the east coast? Seems interesting that bass netters weren't a problem back then in this particular hotspot even though many people say they (the fish) were present in (relatively) huge numbers as well. Maybe the waters were policed better?
 
There's Torness Power Station up near Dunbar, get bass and mullet there but from what I've read before they're just small school bass.
