surely we all know that the rod you use is'nt at the top of the list, dont we ?
so what do you believe is the biggest factor and in what order ???????????????

rigs
bait
venue
experience
rod
reel
attitude
casting

I agree. Knowledge is key. If you fish a mark to death in all different conditions/tides etc. you build up a picture of when it fishes best. Then it's about understanding why the fish are there. What are they feeding on? Lok in the guts of the ones you take. If you can work this out and offer the same as bait or similar you will dramatically increase your chances. Of course there are always the sessions that scream "fish" where you end up blanking!!

This is only my opinion but...

Attitude will get you out fishing to earn the experience
Experience will put everything else into place for you so far as venue, casting, bait, tackle

The only other things would be a good fishing partner/partners and a decent bait supplier

like all sports, practice x3 can only make you better{angler}.you can have a wheelbarrow full of best bait, but if theres no fish there then nothing.all above answers are good ones.my top answer would be knowedge.just make a little note over the years for your personal use, aswell as local catch reports.anyway thats my 2p worth.ps,good thread could be a long interesting one.

Being in the right place at the right time for me come from putting the time in on the marks you fish year after year, sharing and gathering info along the way, bait supply comes into its own also, having it when you need it most sounds easy enough but it runs out quick if your not on the ball!

Knowledge - Knowing where to fish, in what conditions.

Rigs, tackle, cast, bait etc etc all play their part but you are more likely to bag up in a goof spot at the right time with crap bait than at a crap spot at the wrong time with good bait.

practice practice practice

approach each mark differently.

LEARN YOUR MARK, LEARN WHICH BAIT IS BEST ON THAT MARK AND WHAT STAGE OF THE TIDE THE FISH TURN UP.

then there is the tackle bit but that's boring stuff:cool:

Practice makes perfect, but with fishing we have all had those days where you turn up and the fish are just simply there, and everyone catches.

Rods and reels probably near the bottom if not the bottom of your list!
A good cast can be important - mark I fished last night it was essential to have a good cast due to the rocks beneath the cliff + big sea and anything less than 100 yards probably useless.
Bait presentation has always been a big thing for me, I have always been fussy and I remember when lads used to laugh at me for it but now its the mark of a pro ;)
For me I always seem to be among the fish and theres many days I have walked away with the best catch at the venue, but I never seem to get the pigs...I think a lot of that is to do with the crap marks I fish though! so some marks are of course miles better than others
