fished sharply last friday ended up with 7 fish, 5 rainbows 1 blue and a brownie took them all on one of nodrods scuds the green and white one to be exact biggest fish was 6lb. only seen 2 other fish caught while i was there, these flies are the bees nees so how can ppl complain about the price. as i m only a beginner and have gone from catchin 1/2 fish a session to 6/7 fish surely that is worth 90p,





fished sharply again tuesday and had another 6 fish weather was crap really windy, had them all on a scud again green/white and white/white fished them by stripping them back on an intermediate even had one first cast, took a freind from work with me and he tried every thing in his box and only ended up with 1 fish, and he took that on a scud i gave him. just want to say thanks again for the flies nodrog.
 
of course 90p is expensive, compared to the likes of the dawsons olive, cats whiskers and the fritz which have all been good killing patterns compared to these lure prices the scud is expensive, in my opinion put any of the lures mentioned in front of the fish and you will catch

At the end of the day if you dont want to pay 90p for a fly then dont, those of you who are catching fish on the scud seem very pleased to do so and it seems you will continue to pay 90p at least while your catching.
A lot of the flies you buy in tackle shops are foreign imports as is a lot of tackle and is priced a lot cheaper ( using/exploiting cheap labour).
Gordons flies are British made and he needs to cover his costs and make some profit.
Ask yourself this question next time you are thinking of choosing between cheap and expensive flies/tackle, would you work for the same wages as the chinese/Kenyans?
I think not.
I tie some flies which not many others can tie, they catch loads of trout, they are the nearest thing to guarateed catchers as you are ever likely to get and because of this i get
top price for them. Those who have used them think they are worth every penny they pay and come back time and time again.
 
Lots of women in Kenya are working their socks off to supply flies to UK anglers. They get payed approximately nowt and we buy them for a lot more (50p - £1.00 for your standard selction) someone in the middle is making some corn - the Glasgow Angling Center boss was recently bragging in print about how little they payed these fly Tyers and how much he made on them.

I've never had a problem with trout fly prices though - especially when you compare it to the cost of sea angling bait

It is surprisingly easy to learn how to tie your own and suberbly rewarding on many levels. It will not save you money though :o

I've started recently tying Salmon tube flies which must be the easiest but probably amongst the most expensive fly you can buy. It's great and my Mam thinks they are lovely - haven't caught out yet like but ...

i have these 90p scuds already in my fly box its not a point of being tight its a point of paying nearly double the price of a dawsons olive which as a lure is hard to beat. as for people exploiting third world countries it will always happen as buying british always costs more.
 
well ive spent £1000's on fly rods and reels
ive spent £50 on gordons flies
ive spent a quite a bit money on your's truly's flies
its up to me to get the fish

Hi Seddo, i agree entirely with what you are saying, no suggestion towards you being tight(sorry if you took it that way) its sometimes difficult to explain in words.
The trick is to find the feeding zone and as you quite correctly state your dawsons olive would almost surely have caught the fish.
What it all boils down to is confidence in what you are using.
 
I was taught to fly fish by Gordon and in my first year I had my name in the Evening chronicle twice for double figure trout. He does not charge 90p for flies although he could easily charge this amount they work period.

I have never met a more generous bloke both in his freely given advice. Samples of new flies, which I have benefited from on many occasions.

He loves to see and hear of people catching on his flies.

where in any of the posts say that nodrog charges 90p i dont think it does i know of a shop that sells them for 90p say no more, as for nodrog he sounds a bit like meself
 
do you have to have a licence to fish sharply as i am buying some gear and going to try a bit of fly fishing. how can i get my hands on these scuds they seem to be doing well. great report as well mate

yes you will need a rod licence from any post office or buy it online if your gonna be doing a fair bit of trout or coarse fishing youll be best to get a yearly one as its about 3.50 a day licence now and and is costly if you keep buying day ones,and its about 23 pound for the year,not sure on price of yearly new one as getting mine this week.
 
fished sharply again today and again caught fish on nodrogs scuds finnished with 7 droped 3 at the net and missed loads had 5 of those on the scud,weather was shocking but back at work tomorro so just had to get out.
 
Ref nodrog's scuds, up to the present time I haven't had a great deal of success with them but this is in no way running down Gordons pattern, loads of guys have caught loads of fish on them so they are doing the business. The days I used them were very, very trying and most of the other anglers were'nt doing very much either. so this can't be any reflection on his pattern.
This gentleman is generosity himself, after contacting Gordon about his free offer on one of his posts he sent me five free fly's to try, this speaks volumes about this man. As regards the price you pay in the shops for his pattern, a fiver or so is a small price to shell out if it means the difference between a blank or a good days fishing. In MHO I reckon if your fishing outfit runs into a couple of hundred pounds or so and you are sporting £20/£30 for a days fishing, a couple of extra quid for tried and tested flys won't break the bank.

Lets have this put straight regarding the price of scuds, this is my opinion and my opinion alone that the shop selling them is charging far too much. Nodrogs character has never been questioned so i dont need people telling me what a nice bloke he is as his generosity of the amount of flies he has given speaks volumes for the man. i hope this clears things up as i said on an earlier post i have these scuds in my fly box nobody has ever said that they didnt work either .... thanks Big Seddo

I can assure you and everyone else on this particular subject that what I posted was my impression of the man and the fly's concerned and in no way reflects on your or anyone elses threads.
Sometimes what one prints could be picked up in an entirely different way, its just a fact of life, or am I reading the threads wrongly!!
