Shelling mussels

Wouldn`t say he was speedy, just normmal speed when you have had a lot of practice.Had to shell that speed when you had an 8 stone sack to do for the longlines or a fishing party.

Wow, i would say he was very speedy, but thats from the viewpoint of a novice at shelling them.:D Takes me an hour to shell about 50.

Anyone as quick as this fella

I've just got a kilo of live mussel from Asda for £3.50 and managed to fill 4 dealt bags. I'm not as good as this fella is but I'm sure they will do the job

I think unless you pick the mussels yourself and for free, its not worth the effort.

3.50 for a kilo is steep and probably in the end same value for money when you buy them shelled at the tackle shop
:):red: However...I have done it myself and the freezer is full of little mussel bags

Aye your right there Rod.I spent many a day shelling Mussel for long lines.

Im not too bad at it! Although that guy would show me up! Notice the blunt knife he was using.. Better to get round the shell, thats what helps make it fast.. As well as plenty practice! :D

I remember when I was a youngun me grandad used to dee his own mussel for our bait and he used to lay them out separate on newspaper and cover them in salt. I can't remember why he used to salt them. Does anyone know? I have been thinking about trying it to see if it's any better.

Cover with salt after shelling it draws the water out of them and tuffens them up

Will it not be easier to pour hot water on them to open the shells.
put some salt @ VINEGAR on them next should taste nice.personaly when i shell mussel ive got a pan {empty} with a colender inside it peel them into colender then all the exsess water drains into pan.then bag them minus water.

I do buckets of them when i can make the tide. Best way is a round edge knife. Split up the middle then cut them out of each side. Using warm water will part cook them so i dont bother. I do a 10 litre bucket in an hour and 10 mins.
