Shields Groin

Me, Gary & M8s Glen & Ronny fished the Groin yesterday 9.30am to 6.30pm. Glen & Ron left about 4pm & Gary about 5pm, i stayed to see if things got any better into the Flood. Sadly, it remained dire.
The Fishing was almost non existant. I had a just under size Codling on 2nd cast, some hours later Glen had a Scorpion Fish & Gary had a nice Coaley. Ron blanked. :)
No other bites at all for anyone, it really was hard to believe.
Baits used were Live Blacks, Blow Lug, Ragworm,Squid, Mussel,Mackie etc. but the winners on the day were the Crabs. 10 minutes & Hooks were coming back bare every time, the fish just couldnt compete i guess.

A Match lad came on about 6pm and said his m8 had 4 Codling in 4 casts the night before. He left for the Walkway after 2 casts.

To make things more frustrating, Glen heard from a friend that 3 of them went there from about 7pm & had loads of Fish in the dark, including about 10 size Codling between them. :o
I have always assumed that part of the River to be so mucky & deep that light wouldnt penetrate it.

Hitting the Channel wasnt a problem at all & the depth was crazy, way deeper than any of the ground off the Piers.

A really big Ship came past, only about 70 yard off the Groin, & way closer in than we were casting, so the Channel isnt very far out.

Took some Pics of what we did catch.

Hi mate been on Groyne few times over last 2-3 weeks. All of the action I have had has been in darkness and normally 3 hours tide going out. Was out last Sunday night had one to size and another guy pulling in 2 in a time. All crab baits. Just my recent experience anyway I'm no expert by any means

i fished our club match on there friday night Bob.

i had 3 codling size, Chris also had 3.

the 3 lads lads who fished the end didnt have much until around half eleven pm on the ebb. then they started catching regularly just as we were packing up.

That's untrue. We had fish from the 1st cast about 6pm. We had fish right up till just before high water, then it went dead. The fish started to come back on about 1 hour back. We all picked a few more up then packed up about 12.30am

Bob last time I fished out of North Shields kept fish finder on as we came in on boat and was showing over 30 feet mid channel as we passed the groin.
Mick.

Thought it would be much deeper than that Mick, i am surprised. Maybe the light can penetrate that deep in Mucky Water.:o

If you were the 3 lads from Hartlepool (Zippy's v Century) yes you were catching steady throughout the evening or at least till we left at 10pm.

Dont know about that, your mate with the Century had both of you beat on his own lol!

Not quite sure the rules of engagement had been clearly stated before the match, Peever had me beat on bag weight with a fish or two more I recon but I had more beards! Who cares it was good crack thats the main thing.
