heard a 8lb won it,lad had 9 pound disqualified because pier was closed, heard he stopped on pier all night and wasnt aware the pier was closed.NOT VERIFIED

we got told the lad climed round the gate at 6am but you could not go on till 8am wen the gate was opend so if thats the case it wouldnt of bee fair on other people but if he didnt know feel heart sorry for the lad

Shouldnt really matter as long as he only fished within the time limits of the open. Never heard of someone being disqualified for being on thier mark early like

shields pier the open what a farse

shields pier the open what a farse

The pier was open to anglers for The Shields Open only the gates were locked to keep the public off. Only one problem as the gates were locked late arrivals had to climb around the gates. As the rules state if the gates are locked it is out of bounds yet in previous year's winners have NOT been disqualified for being on the pier before the gates were open.
All the year's I have fished the Shields open not just me but a lot of other anglers have been in there spot on the pier before the gates have opened. This has never been a problem in the past as if the pier is not going to be open we would been asked to leave by the gateman but this is not the case today.
As for all the lads fishing the rock marks beyond the barriers they must been out of bounds too.
I think it is disgusting the way they have treat this lad it was a 9 pounder he caught and should not have been disqualified. I have had 5 phone calls from other competitors in the Shields Open and all agree this is wrong and out of order and will Not be fishing this competition again and will not be either!
Congratulations Kev in getting the heaviest fish in the Shields open which is gladly your title. So Sorry mate

aye its sounds like a shame just shows the lad was keen enough to get his mark early i mean what if this guy had been on the pier from sat when the gates was open and stayed all night would he then still be disqualified

Not wanting to get into a dispute or anything but the way I seen it was, the decision to be able to fish the pier was to made at 8am (when the port of Tyne guy) decided If the pier was safe enough to fish therefore opening the gates...

If the lad had went on at 6am and the gates were then not opened, then he would have just wasted his own time. Some people are prepared to go to marks earlier than others and thats the way it is.

I'm sure there were the usual suspects camped out in the river in the early hours. Whats the difference?!

I had to climb round the gate to get off with an hour and a half to go cos it was locked. Am I disqualified?!

I might not know the full story or the full rules but seems a bit harsh to me.

seems harsh on the lad as know there was people camped at the stone jetty at hebburn all night on there mark there was people camped at jarrow all night aswell im sure in previous years anglers have climbed around the gate before it opens at 8am and been in the top 3 does that mean they were cheating aswell

I think the gate locking regime at shields is a joke anyway, not to say that they shouldn't be locked when the weathers bad and dangerous like. Last time I asked PTA why the gates weren't being opened on a Saturday, they said it was because the primer paint that had beem applied to the railings on Friday might not be dried properly, f***n joke. Anyway well done to the lad that got the 9lber and all others that took part. Can't wait to see the results.

were the gates open during the comp if yes then i think it is a bit on the harsh side unless the rules stipulate that there is no tresspassing or that you cant go anywhere if the gates are locked . but is a tough call for the commitee of the club as they have got to be seen to sticking to the rules to prevent any kind of cheating . ( i am not saying the lad was cheating bye the way . ) i know some people bend the rules to try and get an advantage , but if it is in the rules then you are technically cheating .

Shields Pier, was out of bounds, until it was opened at 8 00 am, so anyone on before that, had an unfair advantage, but well done to the lad getting a great fish, and hard lines on the outcome. :( imho.

well every other mark that people got up early for and camped out for should be out of bounds aswell as thats an unfair advantage aswell (i mean being keen and eager to fish a comp shouldnt be an unfair advantage)
