Well I headed out last night hoping for a plaice my third attempt at catching one and once again no joy but it proved to be an interesting evening all the same....
Getting from Hebburn to the pier was an experience with the A184, A194 and A19 all blocked and huge queues of traffic everywhere it was like being in a sci fi movie. I had to drive the wrong way up the duel carriageway twice to escape and ended up having to head in the opposite direction to Washington then cut around through Sunderland and along the coast road to get there. The carriageway on the other side of the A194M was flooded out too so I knew if I didn't make it to the pier I would be stuck and unable to get back home. Anyway, I made it to the pier about an hour later than I had planned.
There were only two lads already on the pier and there were three walking on ahead of me so when I set up that brought the total to six of us. I set up on the first bench along from the rail end and it was about 10pm when I got my first bait in the water. Two hours went by , high tide came and went and darkness fell and not a sniff. I was just starting to think of moving to a different spot when there was a rattle of the rod tip and I pulled in a small eel. Things started picking up then and I started getting a few knocks here and there and caught a small whiting followed by a double shot of whiting then later on a bigger eel. Biggest whiting was 35cm. So five fish aint bad and the roads were clear on the way home except the A194 which was still closed at Jarrow.
